pr\u00e9sidentielles am\u00e9ricaines qui se joueront \u00e0 quelques voix pr\u00e8s dans seulement trois Etats cl\u00e9s et auront pourtant un impact plan\u00e9taire et apr\u00e8s une campagne plus que risible, voil\u00e0 que sort un film que l\u2019ancien Pr\u00e9sident et candidat r\u00e9publicain voulait interdire lors de sa pr\u00e9sentation \u00e0 Cannes en mai dernier. C\u2019est un biopic dont le titre renvoie \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9mission que produisait et animait Donald Trump en 2004, et qui revient sur la gen\u00e8se de son succ\u00e8s et ses liens d\u00e9cisifs avec l\u2019avocat Roy Cohn dont le jeune h\u00e9ritier de l\u2019immobilier avait besoin pour acqu\u00e9rir une toute autre ampleur. Ce mentor, fervent critique de l\u2019homosexualit\u00e9, n&rsquo;\u00e9tait autre que le conseiller juridique du s\u00e9nateur McCarthy et le procureur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral qui envoya \u00e0 la chaise \u00e9lectrique les \u00e9poux Rosenberg accus\u00e9s d\u2019espionnage au profit de l\u2019URSS.<\/p><p>Mais \u00ab\u00a0The Apprentice\u00a0\u00bb est un biopic qui se concentre sur une p\u00e9riode tr\u00e8s limit\u00e9e et avec un angle tr\u00e8s sp\u00e9cifique dont il ne d\u00e9vie jamais. Le film se d\u00e9roule dans le New-York des ann\u00e9es 1970-1980, la d\u00e9cennie ultralib\u00e9rale de Reagan dont Donald J. Trump est le pur produit. A travers ce r\u00e9cit d\u2019apprentissage et cette ascension tragicomique d\u2019un parfait premier degr\u00e9, ce biopic s\u2019impose aussi comme un film sur le pouvoir, sur le syst\u00e8me politique am\u00e9ricain, et enfin sur un pays gangr\u00e9n\u00e9 par un lib\u00e9ralisme exacerb\u00e9 qui sert finalement de terreau \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9mergence de tels personnages. Brillamment \u00e9crit entre pr\u00e9cision du message et dialogues qui font mouche, le sc\u00e9nario de Gabriel Sherman (un journaliste politique) offre un film cinglant et implacable qui fonctionne aussi bien en tant que fresque historique que comme miroir du pr\u00e9sent. Le r\u00e9alisateur dano-iranien r\u00e9ussit son premier film am\u00e9ricain avec une mise en sc\u00e8ne sans temps mort, ses musiques toniques, et ses mouvements dynamiques. R\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 \u00e0 Cannes pour son film \u00ab\u00a0Border\u00a0\u00bb (Prix Un certain regard 2018), c\u2019est aussi l\u2019occasion pour lui de continuer son exploration de la monstruosit\u00e9 humaine apr\u00e8s \u00ab\u00a0Les Nuits de Mashhad\u00a0\u00bb (Prix d\u2019interpr\u00e9tation f\u00e9minine, Cannes 2022).<\/p><p>La mise en sc\u00e8ne nous plonge v\u00e9ritablement dans son \u00e9poque aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de ses personnages avec cadre resserr\u00e9, un grain d\u2019image presque sale et un style rappelant les films en pellicule. En soi, c\u2019est presque comme un film tourn\u00e9 \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque-l\u00e0, ce qui renforce le biopic en s\u2019approchant parfois du document d\u2019\u00e9poque. Mais c\u2019est aussi \u2013 et peut-\u00eatre avant tout \u2013 un film d\u2019acteur(s). Comme \u00e7a l\u2019est toujours pour un biopic ? Oui d\u2019une part car Sebastian Stan a la capacit\u00e9 de se glisser dans la peau de personnages que beaucoup trouvent antipathiques ou m\u00e9prisables (\u00ab Pam and Tommy \u00bb ; \u00ab Fresh \u00bb ; \u00ab A Different Man \u00bb) et qu\u2019il fallait son panache pour interpr\u00e9ter l\u2019ancien et peut-\u00eatre de nouveau futur Pr\u00e9sident sans tomber dans la caricature tout en \u00e9voluant au fur et \u00e0 mesure du r\u00e9cit de plus en plus proche de l\u2019homme que l\u2019on conna\u00eet tous aujourd\u2019hui. Mais pas n\u00e9cessairement non plus, car d\u2019autre part s\u2019il s\u2019agit bien d\u2019un film sur Trump, c\u2019est bien Roy Cohn la boussole de l\u2019intrigue de leur rencontre \u00e0 la grande surprise du r\u00e9cit : r\u00e9ussir \u00e0 rendre un tel personnage \u00e9mouvant. Jeremy Strong porte d\u00e9cidemment bien son nom, car l\u2019acteur de \u00ab Armageddon Time \u00bb, \u00ab Les Sept de Chicago \u00bb et surtout connu maintenant pour la s\u00e9rie \u00ab Succession \u00bb (Emmy award en 2020) d\u00e9livre ici une performance aussi gla\u00e7ante que tragique.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0The Apprentice\u00a0\u00bb est donc non seulement un tr\u00e8s bon biopic, mais aussi un tr\u00e8s bon film au-del\u00e0 de sa port\u00e9e historique et r\u00e9aliste, qui brille par ses performances remarquables, un rythme cisel\u00e9 et un humour parfois dr\u00f4le et souvent terrifiant. This biopic, whose title refers to the show Donald Trump produced and hosted in 2004, looks back at the roots of his success and his key relationship with lawyer Roy Cohn, which the young real-estate heir needed in order to achieve his full potential. This mentor, a staunch critic of homosexuality, was none other than Senator McCarthy&rsquo;s legal advisor and the Attorney General who sent the Rosenbergs to the electric chair on charges of spying for the USSR.<\/p><p>But \u201cThe Apprentice\u201d is a biopic that focuses on a very limited period and with a very specific angle from which it never deviates. The film is set in the New York of the 1970s-1980s, Reagan&rsquo;s ultra-liberal decade of which Donald J. Trump is the quintessential offspring. Through this initiation story and tragicomic rise, this biopic is also a film about power, about the American political system, and finally about a country corrupted by an excessive liberalism that ultimately serves as a breeding ground for the emergence of such characters. Brilliantly written, with a sharp message and hard-hitting dialogue, Gabriel Sherman&rsquo;s (a political journalist) screenplay offers a scathing, relentless film that acts as both a historical portrait and a mirror of the present. The Danish-Iranian director succeeds in making his first American film with a production that never slows down, dynamic movements and rousing music. Acclaimed at Cannes for his film \u201cBorder\u201d (\u201cUn certain regard\u201d 2018 Award), this is also an opportunity for him to pursue his exploration of human monstrosity after \u201cHoly Spider\u201d (Best Actress Award, Cannes 2022).<\/p><p>The direction truly immerses us in its time period alongside its characters, with tight framing, an almost dirty image feel and a style reminiscent of movies shot on film. In itself, it&rsquo;s almost like a film shot at that time, which reinforces the biopic by sometimes verging on the period document. But it is also &#8211; and perhaps above all &#8211; an actor&rsquo;s feature. As it always is for a biopic, right? Yes, on one hand, because Sebastian Stan has the ability to step into the shoes of characters many may find unpleasant or despicable (\u201cPam and Tommy\u201d; \u201cFresh\u201d; \u201cA Different Man\u201d), and his panache was essential to portray the former and perhaps future President without falling into caricature, while evolving over the course of the story closer and closer to the man we all know today. But not necessarily either, because on the other hand, if this is indeed a film about Trump, it&rsquo;s Roy Cohn who is the driving force behind the plot from their meeting to the story&rsquo;s great surprise: managing to make such a character moving. Jeremy Strong certainly lives up to his name, as the actor of \u201cArmageddon Time\u201d, \u201cThe Trial of the Chicago 7\u201d and now best known for the series \u201cSuccession\u201d (2020 Emmy award) delivers here a performance as chilling as it is tragic.<\/p><p>\u201cThe Apprentice\u201d is therefore not only a very good biopic, but also a very good film beyond its historical and realistic scope, which shines with outstanding performances, a strong pace and humor that is sometimes funny and often terrifying. This is an independent film (Canada, Denmark, Ireland, USA) with a strong message and extremely appropriate timing&#8230;<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Rapha\u00ebl Sallenave<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-e213b9d elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default
