Deux hommes et deux visions s\u2019affrontent alors dans ce conte\u00a0politique r\u00e9trofuturiste : Cic\u00e9ron vs C\u00e9sar ou le politicien au projet de cit\u00e9-casino vs l\u2019inventeur d\u2019un mat\u00e9riau r\u00e9volutionnaire qui veut b\u00e2tir une ville qui puisse faire r\u00eaver les gens\u00a0!<\/p><p>Ecrit d\u00e8s 1983 et termin\u00e9 \u00e0 coup de millions sortis de ses propres poches \u2013 Coppola a notamment vendu un vignoble pour l\u2019autofinancer \u00e0 hauteur de $120M car aucun studio ne voulait se risquer \u00e0 un tel projet \u2013 \u00ab Megalopolis \u00bb est tout simplement le projet d\u2019une vie. Un projet vieux de plus de quarante ans qui s\u2019av\u00e8re aussi monumental qu\u2019exp\u00e9rimental, et d\u00e9finitivement pas commercial. In\u00e9vitablement attendu depuis des ann\u00e9es, le film a beaucoup divis\u00e9 son public d\u00e8s sa sortie \u00e0 Cannes, sans sembler proposer vraiment de juste milieu. Cela peut en effet \u00eatre le signe des grands films, ceux qui marquent et divisent. Car il est vrai qu\u2019on peut tout \u00e0 fait accepter d\u2019\u00eatre d\u00e9rang\u00e9 par la singularit\u00e9 d\u2019une \u0153uvre, d\u2019autant plus pour une \u0153uvre qui parle justement de cr\u00e9ation, mais cela serait acceptable pour un film qui captive son spectateur \u2013 voire le perd mais pour le questionner \u2013 un film qui renouvelle un concept ou une id\u00e9e, ou encore nous stup\u00e9fie par sa plasticit\u00e9, bref \u2026 pas un film qui perd son propre fil conducteur, laisse de c\u00f4t\u00e9 certains \u00e9l\u00e9ments cruciaux de l\u2019intrigue et nous endort avec une histoire d\u00e9sorganis\u00e9e et finalement assez banale !<\/p><p>Sorte de dystopie du pr\u00e9sent (avec \u00e9videmment un cadre futuriste, mais aussi un environnement issu du pass\u00e9, ainsi que plein d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ments de d\u00e9cors d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui \u2013 \u00e0 commencer par un Manhattan tr\u00e8s reconnaissable avec son Chrysler Building \u2013 sans compter les nombreuses datations de l\u2019histoire en MMXXIV), \u00ab\u00a0Megalopolis\u00a0\u00bb nous plonge dans une atmosph\u00e8re bien sp\u00e9ciale (qui peut para\u00eetre incoh\u00e9rente ou en rebuter certains) avec une esth\u00e9tique dor\u00e9e, tr\u00e8s num\u00e9rique et presque artificielle. Et avec ses r\u00e9f\u00e9rences \u00e0 diff\u00e9rentes \u00e9poques, le film nous offre une panoplie de costumes et de d\u00e9cors iconiques et symboliques ainsi que quelques plans sublimes, \u00e0 l\u2019image du protagoniste-cr\u00e9ateur en \u00e9quilibre au-dessus du vide, ou des statues mouvantes comme celle de la Justice qui s\u2019effondre, ou encore du plan du baiser v\u00e9ritable m\u00e9taphore o\u00f9 les personnages d\u2019Adam Driver et Nathalie Emmanuel \u2013 dont la romance est difficilement cr\u00e9dible ou ne provoque pas vraiment d\u2019\u00e9motions \u2013 tombent amoureux.<\/p><p>Mais si les visuels offrent quelques tableaux, les acteurs eux sont assez in\u00e9gaux \u00e0 l\u2019image des variations de ton du film. Il est vrai que retranscrire le g\u00e9nie de l\u2019intelligence \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran est un d\u00e9fi particuli\u00e8rement difficile au cin\u00e9ma. Et Coppola \u00e9vite les clich\u00e9s des multitudes de diagrammes, mais son approche consistant \u00e0 d\u00e9peindre son protagoniste dans une forme de r\u00e9flexion d\u00e9lirante, n\u2019apporte pas beaucoup plus de clart\u00e9 \u00e0 son r\u00e9cit. Et il est bien l\u00e0 le probl\u00e8me principal de \u00ab Megalopolis \u00bb, dans son r\u00e9cit. Si l\u2019histoire est remplie de r\u00e9f\u00e9rences historiques, artistiques et politiques, elle est aussi d\u00e9cousue et confuse. Il est difficile de d\u00e9m\u00ealer les fils d\u2019un tel sc\u00e9nario qui semble rempli d\u2019id\u00e9es sans vraie ligne directrice : entre les complots d\u2019un fils de banquier, le scandale d\u2019une vestale, un satellite sovi\u00e9tique (qui n\u2019a aucune incidence sur l\u2019intrigue dans sa globalit\u00e9), le pouvoir d\u2019arr\u00eater le temps de son h\u00e9ros (pourquoi ou comment ? Aucune id\u00e9e \u2026), le tout sur des citations de Marc Aur\u00e8le ! C\u2019est un film sur un architecte qui ne raconte rien sur la ville, et dont les enjeux ne correspondent tout simplement pas \u00e0 ses personnages avec la majorit\u00e9 de la population simplement d\u00e9peinte comme une masse manifestant dans les rues sans \u00e2me.<\/p><p>S\u2019il se veut \u00eatre une fresque visionnaire, \u00ab\u00a0Megalopolis\u00a0\u00bb est donc surtout un film chaotique. Mais c\u2019est plus un manifeste de cr\u00e9ation artistique qu\u2019un long-m\u00e9trage \u00e0 la narration coh\u00e9rente. C\u2019est une \u0153uvre qui se rapproche de l\u2019expressionisme exp\u00e9rimental, \u00e0 l\u2019image de la sc\u00e8ne o\u00f9 le personnage d\u2019Adam Driver r\u00e9pond comme en pleine conf\u00e9rence de presse \u00e0 un journaliste qui est jou\u00e9 par un individu se pla\u00e7ant devant l\u2019\u00e9cran avec un micro pour cette sc\u00e8ne (seuls les chanceux de Cannes ou des s\u00e9ances sp\u00e9ciales avant la sortie internationale auront eu droit \u00e0 cette s\u00e9quence avec l\u2019individu dans la salle de cin\u00e9ma \u2013 pour les autres la question aura \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9-enregistr\u00e9e). S\u2019il s\u2019av\u00e8re malheureusement incernable et assez creux, \u00ab\u00a0Megalopolis\u00a0\u00bb restera n\u00e9anmoins un film unique, il n\u2019y en a clairement pas d\u2019autre qui lui ressemble.<\/p><p>C\u2019est une forme d\u2019autoportrait de l\u2019artiste, et un film qui appelle \u00e0 redonner son importance au geste cr\u00e9atif, en particulier lorsque celui-ci soutient une vision utopique du monde. C\u2019est un film qu\u2019il serait peut-\u00eatre int\u00e9ressant de voir sous l\u2019angle surr\u00e9aliste. Et c\u2019est, enfin, un film qui peut s\u2019av\u00e9rer int\u00e9ressant pour ceux curieux d\u2019une \u0153uvre qui cherche \u00e0 cr\u00e9er (et quand on cherche on ne trouve pas toujours), mais pour tout autre public (bien que la curiosit\u00e9 soit un atout en r\u00e8gle g\u00e9n\u00e9rale), cette fois-ci, passez votre chemin. Two men and two visions confront each other in this retro-futuristic political tale: Cicero vs. Caesar, or the politician with the casino-city vision vs. the inventor of a revolutionary material who wants to build a city that can make people dream!<\/p><p>Written as early as 1983 and completed with millions of dollars of his own money \u2013 Coppola sold a vineyard to finance it at a cost of $120 million, because no studio would risk such a venture \u2013 \u201cMegalopolis\u201d is quite simply the work of a lifetime. It&rsquo;s a project more than forty years in the making, as monumental as it is experimental, and definitely not a commercial undertaking. Highly-anticipated for years, the film has divided audiences ever since its release at Cannes, without really offering any middle ground. This can indeed be the sign of great films, those that leave their mark and divide. It&rsquo;s true that it&rsquo;s perfectly acceptable to be disturbed by the singularity of a film, all the more so for one that is precisely about creation, but this would be acceptable for a movie that captivates its viewer \u2013 or even loses him, but in order to question him \u2013 a movie that revitalizes a concept or an idea, or stuns us with its visuals, in short &#8230; not a movie that loses its own story line, leaves out crucial plot elements and lulls us to sleep with a messed-up, and ultimately rather mundane, tale!<\/p><p>As a kind of present-day dystopia (with a futuristic setting, of course, but also an environment from the past, as well as a number of present-day set pieces \u2013 starting with a very recognizable Manhattan with its Chrysler Building \u2013 not to mention the multiple dating of the story to MMXXIV), \u201cMegalopolis\u201d immerses us in a very special atmosphere (which may seem disjointed or off-putting to some) with a gilded, very digital and almost artificial aesthetic. And with its references to different eras, the film offers us a host of iconic and symbolic costumes and sets, as well as some gorgeous shots, such as the protagonist-creator hanging above the void, or the moving statues, like the one of Justice collapsing, or the metaphorical kissing shot where Adam Driver and Nathalie Emmanuel&rsquo;s characters \u2013 whose romance is hardly believable or emotionally compelling \u2013 are falling in love.<\/p><p>But if the visuals offer a few wonderful paintings, the actors are as uneven as the film&rsquo;s variations in tone. It&rsquo;s true that bringing the genius of intelligence to the screen is a particularly difficult challenge for cinema. And Coppola avoids the clich\u00e9s of endless diagrams, but his approach of depicting his protagonist in a form of wacky brainstorming doesn&rsquo;t add much clarity to his narrative. And therein lies the main problem with \u201cMegalopolis\u201d, in its narrative. While the story is full of historical, artistic and political references, it&rsquo;s also disjointed and confused. It&rsquo;s hard to untangle the threads of such a script, which seems to be full of ideas without any real guidelines: between the plotting of a banker&rsquo;s son, the scandal of a vestal, a Soviet satellite (which has no bearing on the plot as a whole), the hero&rsquo;s power to stop time (why or how? No idea &#8230;), all on top of quotes from Marcus Aurelius! This is a film about an architect that doesn&rsquo;t tell you anything about the city, and whose stakes simply don&rsquo;t match its characters, with the majority of the population simply depicted as a soulless mass protesting in the streets.<\/p><p>Despite aiming to be a visionary epic, \u201cMegalopolis\u201d is above all a chaotic film. But it&rsquo;s more of a manifesto of artistic creation than a feature film with a coherent narrative. It&rsquo;s a work that comes close to experimental expressionism, as in the scene where Adam Driver&rsquo;s character responds as if in the middle of a press conference to a journalist who is played by an individual standing in front of the screen with a microphone for this scene (only those lucky enough to have attended Cannes or the special screenings before the international wide release will have had the chance to see this sequence with the individual in the cinema \u2013 for the others, the question will have been pre-recorded). While it may unfortunately prove dull and rather empty, \u201cMegalopolis\u201d will nonetheless remain a unique film \u2013 there&rsquo;s clearly no other quite like it.<\/p><p>This is a kind of self-portrait of the artist, and a film that calls for a return to the importance of the creative process, particularly when it supports a utopian vision of the world. This is a film that might be interesting to see from a surrealist perspective. And, finally, this is a film that may be of interest to those curious about a work that tries to create (and when you&rsquo;re trying, you don&rsquo;t always succeed), but for any other audience (although curiosity is generally a virtue), this time, just skip it. And if you found this review rather unstructured, rest assured that it&rsquo;s probably a reflection of the film itself&#8230;<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s
