Suite \u00e0 sa disparition, Massamba part \u00e0 sa recherche, \u00e0 ses risques et p\u00e9rils \u2026 Pour son premier long-m\u00e9trage, le prometteur Simon Mouta\u00efrou (qui a \u00e9crit les sc\u00e9narios de \u00ab\u00a0Bo\u00eete\u00a0Noire\u00a0\u00bb et de \u00ab\u00a0Goliath\u00a0\u00bb) s\u2019attaque \u00e0 des th\u00e9matiques historiques fortes\u00a0: celles de l\u2019esclavage et du marronnage sur une \u00eele dont on a oubli\u00e9 qu\u2019elle fut fran\u00e7aise \u00e0 une \u00e9poque \u2013 l\u2019\u00cele Maurice.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div><p>Port\u00e9 par des actrices et acteurs brillants dans leur trouble, leur noirceur et leur (d\u00e9s)espoir, \u00ab\u00a0Ni Cha\u00eenes ni Ma\u00eetres\u00a0\u00bb raconte l\u2019histoire d\u2019une fuite initiatique \u00e0 travers la jungle, o\u00f9 Massamba (Ibrahima Mbaye) renoue progressivement avec ses racines et ses pouvoirs de f\u00e9ticheur, tout en tentant de survivre \u00e0 sa poursuite par une f\u00e9roce et fanatique Madame La Victoire (Camille Cottin), et en cherchant inlassablement sa fille (Anna Thiandoum) en qu\u00eate de libert\u00e9 \u2013 symbolis\u00e9e par la l\u00e9gende de Fi-boumi-diam-yi-dogue, ce village paisible fond\u00e9 par d\u2019anciens esclaves lib\u00e9r\u00e9s de leurs jougs et bourreaux.<\/p><p>Sombre dans le fond, le film l\u2019est aussi dans la forme, avec des couleurs alternant entre d\u2019une part le vert cauchemardesque des champs et de la for\u00eat, et d\u2019autre part le bleu nuit d\u2019un onirisme introspectif et d\u2019un animisme po\u00e9tique. Bien que parsem\u00e9 de sc\u00e8nes de violence physique comme morale, le long-m\u00e9trage se veut aussi r\u00e9flexif et contemplatif, avec une trame qui tire parfois en longueur pour souligner les (re)d\u00e9couvertes que font les personnages sur leur existence et leurs croyances. L\u2019\u00e9criture des dialogues en wolof appuie d\u2019ailleurs cette volont\u00e9 de r\u00e9appropriation de soi et de sa propre culture, loin des carcans coloniaux.<\/p><p>Si l\u2019intrigue reste fictive, elle demeure tr\u00e8s bien document\u00e9e et se montre d\u2019un r\u00e9alisme frappant. Following her disappearance, Massamba sets out to find her, at his own risk&#8230; For his first feature film, the up-and-coming Simon Mouta\u00efrou (who wrote the screenplays for \u201cBlack Box\u201d and \u201cGoliath\u201d) tackles some powerful historical themes: slaves and maroons on an island that we&rsquo;ve forgotten was once French: Mauritius.<\/p><p>Carried by a cast of actors brilliant in their confusion, darkness and hope\/despair struggles, \u201cNo Chains, No Masters\u201d tells the story of an initiation journey through the jungle, where Massamba (Ibrahima Mbaye) gradually reconnects with his roots and his fetish powers, while trying to survive his fanatical hunt by a fierce Madame La Victoire (Camille Cottin), and tirelessly searching for his daughter (Anna Thiandoum) in search of freedom \u2013 symbolized by the legend of Fi-boumi-diam-yi-dogue, the peaceful village founded by former slaves freed from their yokes and oppressors.<\/p><p>The film is dark both in content and style, with colors alternating between the nightmarish green of fields and forest on the one hand, and the midnight blue of introspective dreams and poetic animism on the other. Although peppered with scenes of physical and moral violence, the film is also reflective and contemplative, with a plot that occasionally drags on to underline the characters&rsquo; (re)discoveries about their existence and beliefs. The writing of the dialogues in Wolof supports this desire to reappropriate oneself and one&rsquo;s own culture, far from colonial shackles.<\/p><p>While the plot remains fictional, it is well documented and strikingly realistic. By revisiting the myth of Morne Brabant and the first controversies over slavery in the midst of the Lumi\u00e8res movement, the film invites us to remember the misdeeds and horrors of colonization
