Il raconte trois destins que cette guerre officiellement pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e comme une \u201cop\u00e9ration anti-terroriste\u201d va amener \u00e0 se croiser : celui d\u2019un petit gar\u00e7on fuyant la guerre dans le flot de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s, une charg\u00e9e de missions de la Commission des Droits de l\u2019Homme de l\u2019UE, et un jeune Russe enr\u00f4l\u00e9 dans l\u2019arm\u00e9e. Le parall\u00e8le avec la situation actuelle en Ukraine et en particulier \u00e0 l\u2019Est de l\u2019ex R\u00e9publique sovi\u00e9tique est ind\u00e9niable et \u00e9tait d\u2019ores et d\u00e9j\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent \u00e0 la sortie du film puisqu\u2019il fut pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 en comp\u00e9tition officielle \u00e0 Cannes en 2014 quelques mois apr\u00e8s l\u2019annexion de la Crim\u00e9e.<\/p><p>Adapt\u00e9 du film \u00ab Les Anges Manqu\u00e9s \u00bb (1948) de Fred Zinnemann, \u00ab The Search \u00bb est le premier film d\u2019Hazanavicius apr\u00e8s son Oscar pour \u00ab The Artist \u00bb et s\u2019av\u00e8re \u00eatre un film moins port\u00e9 sur le cin\u00e9ma et plus personnel dans la mesure o\u00f9 sa famille lituanienne est d\u2019origine juive ashk\u00e9naze et dut fuir et se cacher lors de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale.<\/p><p>C\u2019est un film lent et \u00e9mouvant notamment du fait du pesant silence du jeune protagoniste. Mais c\u2019est bien \u00e9videmment un silence qui fait sens face \u00e0 ce qu\u2019il a v\u00e9cu. La progression narrative est par ailleurs assez classique dans le sens o\u00f9 l\u2019on s\u2019y attend mais pas parce qu\u2019il s\u2019agit d\u2019un sc\u00e9nario cousu de fil blanc mais plus parce que la guerre est devenue une banalit\u00e9 que l\u2019on a pris l\u2019habitude de regarder de loin. C\u2019est aussi un film fort qui se distingue par un grain particulier, des couleurs ternes et des cam\u00e9ras \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9paule lors des sc\u00e8nes de guerre, lui conf\u00e9rant un look tr\u00e8s r\u00e9aliste. Son message est clair et traite la question des deux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de la fronti\u00e8re civile, avec l\u2019accueil des r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s et le r\u00f4le des institutions internationales voisines, mais aussi avec l\u2019endoctrinement de l\u2019arm\u00e9e russe transformant compl\u00e8tement leurs jeunes recrues \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re de \u00ab Full Metal Jacket \u00bb. Le film conclut par ailleurs sur une excellente surprise chronologique.<\/p><p>Le jeune Abdul Khalim Mamutsiev est tr\u00e8s attachant dans le r\u00f4le principal avec \u00e0 ses c\u00f4t\u00e9s une B\u00e9r\u00e9nice Bejo impuissante mais volontaire, une Annette Bening qui fait de son mieux avec la Croix Rouge, et un remarquable Maksim Emelyanov dans le r\u00f4le du jeune soldat russe.<\/p><p>La longueur du film (2h14), son aspect multilingue (anglais, fran\u00e7ais, russe, tch\u00e9tch\u00e8ne) et ses sc\u00e8nes de m\u00e9lo ont s\u00fbrement pes\u00e9 sur l\u2019accueil tr\u00e8s mitig\u00e9 qu\u2019il re\u00e7ut et qui fut confirm\u00e9 par un impressionnant flop au box-office (22M\u20ac de budget pour seulement $434.000 de recettes). It tells the story of three destinies that this war, officially described as an \u00ab\u00a0anti-terrorist operation\u00a0\u00bb, will intersect: a little boy fleeing the war in the stream of refugees, a woman appointed by the EU Human Rights Commission, and a young Russian enlisted in the army. The parallel with the current situation in Ukraine and in particular in the eastern part of the former Soviet Republic is undeniable and was already there when the film was released since it was presented in the official competition at Cannes in 2014 just a few months after the annexation of Crimea.<\/p><p>Adapted from Fred Zinnemann&rsquo;s \u201cThe Search\u201d (1948), Hazanavicius&rsquo;s first film after his Oscar for \u201cThe Artist\u201d proves to be a less cinema-oriented and more personal film insofar as his Lithuanian family is of Ashkenazi Jewish origin and had to flee and hide during World War II.<\/p><p>It is a slow and moving film, especially because of the heavy silence of the young protagonist. But obviously this silence makes sense in light of what he experienced. The storyline is quite conventional insofar as it is somewhat predictable, but not because the script is so weak, but rather because war has become a commonplace that we become accustomed to watching from afar. It is also a strong film characterized by a specific texture, dull colors and hand-held cameras during the war scenes, giving it a very realistic look. Its message is clear and tackles the issue on both sides of the civil border, with the accommodation of refugees and the role of neighboring international institutions, as well as with the indoctrination of the Russian army completely transforming their young recruits a la \u201cFull Metal Jacket\u201d. The movie also wraps up with a great chronological twist.<\/p><p>The young Abdul Khalim Mamutsiev is very endearing in the main role with a helpless but willing B\u00e9r\u00e9nice Bejo, an Annette Bening who does her best with Red Cross, and a remarkable Maksim Emelyanov as the young Russian soldier.<\/p><p>The length of the film (134 minutes), its multilingual aspect (English, French, Russian, Chechen) and its melo scenes surely weighed on the very mixed reception it received which was further confirmed by a huge flop at the box-office (a 22M\u20ac budget for only $434,000 in worldwide box-office). If the film had been American, it would probably have received more praises, but in any case, it is a beautiful picture &#8211; certainly the most unusual of Hazanavicius&rsquo; filmography &#8211; conveying a universal message and a story that deserves to be revisited today.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Rapha\u00ebl
