C\u2019est une citadelle d\u2019immeubles entass\u00e9s les uns sur les autres o\u00f9 les ruelles sont des couloirs, une v\u00e9ritable ville dans la ville, progressivement devenue zone de non-droit dans laquelle ni les repr\u00e9sentants britanniques ni les autorit\u00e9s chinoises \u2013 pas plus que la lumi\u00e8re du jour \u2013 ne pouvaient p\u00e9n\u00e9trer\u00a0! C\u2019est une cit\u00e9 livr\u00e9e \u00e0 elle-m\u00eame o\u00f9 l\u2019on vit les uns sur les autres, un gigantesque bidonville vertical, o\u00f9 tout le monde se file un coup de main pour survivre. Cyclone en est le chef mais son temps sera bient\u00f4t compt\u00e9 et c\u2019est pourquoi ses rivaux s\u2019activent. Par ailleurs avec la cessation de la cit\u00e9 par les autorit\u00e9s britanniques \u00e0 la Chine, la citadelle est elle-m\u00eame menac\u00e9e de destruction.<\/p><p>Voici donc le contexte de ce film d\u2019arts martiaux chinois qui met en sc\u00e8ne un immigr\u00e9 clandestin qui se r\u00e9fugie dans la c\u00e9l\u00e8bre citadelle de Kowloon suite \u00e0 un diff\u00e9rend avec une des triades, en pleine crise des r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s \u00e0 Hong-Kong. C\u2019est le nouveau film de Soi Cheang, le fils spirituel de l\u2019\u00e2ge d\u2019or du cin\u00e9ma d\u2019action hongkongais des ann\u00e9es 1980-1990, et l\u2019un des derniers vestiges d\u2019une industrie cin\u00e9matographique ind\u00e9pendante, l\u2019un des derniers films \u2018hongkongais\u2019 \u00e0 proprement parler. Le r\u00e9alisateur de \u00ab\u00a0Limbo\u00a0\u00bb rend ici hommage non seulement \u00e0 ses ma\u00eetres avec ce film de gangsters g\u00e9n\u00e9reux en combats spectaculaires, mais aussi au Hong-Kong d\u2019antan et en particulier \u00e0 cette fameuse citadelle d\u00e9molie en 1993 que le film reproduit de mani\u00e8re \u00e9poustouflante pour un budget tr\u00e8s raisonnable ($38M).<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0City of Darkness\u00a0\u00bb nous plonge ainsi dans ce lieu fascinant, tel un personnage \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re de l\u2019intrigue, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un magnifique travail de d\u00e9cors de Kenneth Mak o\u00f9 la cam\u00e9ra circule entre les dalles de b\u00e9ton, les fouillis de c\u00e2bles et les escaliers brinquebalants dans des sc\u00e8nes d\u2019action qui int\u00e8grent cette topographie particuli\u00e8re. On retrouve l\u2019univers graphique cr\u00e9pusculaire de son r\u00e9alisateur dans des chor\u00e9graphies vari\u00e9es et inventives entre le r\u00e9alisme et la po\u00e9sie du cin\u00e9ma martial chinois.<\/p><p>La photographie embellit v\u00e9ritablement les sc\u00e8nes d\u2019action et donne une vraie atmosph\u00e8re \u00e0 l\u2019ensemble quitte \u00e0 s\u2019approcher du ridicule ou de l\u2019excessif par moments mais toujours en restant coh\u00e9rent avec le ton du film. Si derri\u00e8re sa folle \u00e9nergie, le film propose un sous-texte politique anticolonial et de lutte des classes, \u00ab\u00a0City of Darkness\u00a0\u00bb reste avant tout un film d\u2019action qui ne d\u00e9passe pas vraiment son cadre mais symbolise bel et bien la fin d\u2019une \u00e9poque.<\/p><p>Cependant si les chor\u00e9graphies sont impressionnantes et l\u2019intrigue captivante, le sc\u00e9nario risque lui de perdre son spectateur d\u2019une part en introduisant des \u00e9l\u00e9ments fantastiques qui surgissent sans pr\u00e9avis, et d\u2019autre part \u2013 et surtout \u2013 en \u00e9tirant beaucoup trop son r\u00e9cit. Pour \u00eatre encore plus pr\u00e9cis, le film \u00e9tire en fait beaucoup trop sa phase de r\u00e9solution avec pas moins de trois troisi\u00e8mes actes dans un film qui ne dure que 2h, certes, mais qui par cons\u00e9quent para\u00eet malheureusement bien plus long \u00e0 force de r\u00e9p\u00e9ter des s\u00e9quences de conclusion. This is a citadel of buildings piled one on top of the other, where alleyways are corridors, a real city within the city, gradually becoming a lawless zone into which neither British representatives nor Chinese authorities \u2013 or daylight for that matter \u2013 could enter! It&rsquo;s a walled city where people live on top of each other, a gigantic vertical shantytown, where everyone gives each other a hand to survive. Cyclone is its leader, but his time is running out, so his rivals are getting ready to take over. And with the British authorities ceding the city to China, the citadel itself is threatened with destruction.<\/p><p>This is the background to this Chinese martial arts film about an illegal immigrant who takes refuge in the notorious Kowloon citadel following a dispute with one of the triads, in the midst of Hong Kong&rsquo;s refugee crisis. This is the latest film from Soi Cheang, the spiritual son of the golden age of Hong Kong action cinema in the 1980s-1990s, and one of the last remnants of an independent film industry, one of the last truly &lsquo;Hong Kong&rsquo; productions. The director of \u201cLimbo\u201d pays homage not only to his masters with this gangster film packed with spectacular fights, but also to the Hong Kong of yesteryear, and in particular to the famous citadel demolished in 1993, which the film recreates in breathtaking fashion on a very decent budget ($38M).<\/p><p>\u201cCity of Darkness\u201d brings us into this fascinating place as a fully-fledged character in the plot, thanks to Kenneth Mak&rsquo;s outstanding set design, in which the camera moves between concrete slabs, jumbled cables and rickety staircases in action scenes that fully take into account this unique layout. The director&rsquo;s crepuscular visual universe is again expressed in the diverse, and creative choreographies that combine the realism and poetry of Chinese martial arts cinema.<\/p><p>The cinematography truly enhances the action scenes and lends a real atmosphere to the whole thing, even if it sometimes borders on the ridiculous or over-the-top, always remaining consistent with the film&rsquo;s tone though. While behind its wild energy lies an anti-colonial and class struggle political subtext, \u201cCity of Darkness\u201d remains above all an action film that doesn&rsquo;t really go beyond its framework, but does indeed symbolize the end of an era.<\/p><p>However, while the choreography is impressive and the plot captivating, the script does run the risk of alienating the viewer, not only by introducing fantasy elements that pop up without warning, but also \u2013 and above all \u2013 by stretching the story too far. To be even more specific, the film stretches its resolution stage far too much, with no less than three third acts in a film that, while only 2 hours long, unfortunately feels much longer as a result of its repeated conclusion sequences. A futility (perhaps due to the adaptation of the manhua) that nonetheless profoundly affects the way such a film is perceived at the end!<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r
