\u2026 le jumeau de l\u2019Ap\u00f4tre Thomas s\u2019opposait \u00e0 son fr\u00e8re en refusant de croire en une puissance sup\u00e9rieure et divine. Le d\u00e9nomm\u00e9 Clarence opte ainsi plus pour le savoir que la foi, et sa seule certitude \u00e0 l\u2019heure qu\u2019il est n\u2019est autre qu\u2019il a moins d\u2019un mois pour rembourser sa dette \u00e0 Jedediah le Terrible. C\u2019est donc, si l\u2019on synth\u00e9tise le parcours et les variations narratives d\u2019un tel film, l\u2019histoire d\u2019un infid\u00e8le qui va d\u00e9couvrir la foi \u00e0 travers le miracle que sa vie va \u00e9trangement devenir \u2026<\/p><p>Second film de Jeymes Samuel, \u00ab\u00a0Le Livre de Clarence\u00a0\u00bb est un film (au moins d\u2019un certain point de vue) religieux, un r\u00e9cit (semi)biblique qui m\u00e9lange \u00e0 nouveau les styles sur un ton l\u00e9ger et une approche afro. Le r\u00e9alisateur britannique est avant tout un musicien et cela se ressentait dans son premier film sorti il y a deux ans sur <em>Netflix<\/em>, \u00ab\u00a0The Harder They Fall\u00a0\u00bb qui offrait une relecture du mythe du western \u00e0 la sauce Blaxploitation et anachronique o\u00f9 les duels ne se jouaient pas au rythme des balles mais bien des notes. Ceux qui l\u2019auront vu seront d\u00e9j\u00e0 moins d\u00e9pays\u00e9s par son style atypique pour embarquer dans son nouveau film, un projet audacieux puisqu\u2019il s\u2019attaque avec le m\u00eame m\u00e9lange de style musical \u00e0 une relecture biblique. Mais ce qui fonctionnait particuli\u00e8rement bien avec le western, marche moins sur l\u2019eau cette fois.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0Le Livre de Clarence\u00a0\u00bb propose un arc surprenant d\u2019une parodie chr\u00e9tienne (\u00e0 la \u00ab\u00a0Vie de Brian\u00a0\u00bb des Monty Python) \u00e0 un pur r\u00e9cit biblique avec beaucoup de changements de ton tout au long de ce parcours. Le r\u00e9cit religieux pourra \u00eatre vu sous l\u2019angle de l\u2019humour, ou du blasph\u00e8me, mais ce qui est s\u00fbr c\u2019est qu\u2019il m\u00e9lange compl\u00e8tement les styles avec par exemple une reconstitution des sc\u00e8nes de crucifixion ou de la C\u00e8ne par exemple, ainsi qu\u2019une Marie Madelaine dans une course de char \u00e0 la \u00ab\u00a0Ben-Hur\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p><p>On a ainsi droit \u00e0 des moments comiques, des sc\u00e8nes au second degr\u00e9, des moments plus critiques aussi bien de la religion que de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 \u2013 avec notamment un commentaire moderne sur le conflit entre la population noire et la police aux USA \u2013 ainsi que d\u2019autres moments, eux, beaucoup plus s\u00e9rieux. Certains pourront le voir comme une provocation, d\u2019autre comme un r\u00e9cit fondamentalement biblique, et le reste y trouvera sa propre conception d\u2019un entre-deux.<\/p><p>L\u2019ensemble est in\u00e9gal de par le manque d\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat de la premi\u00e8re partie et surtout de par les trop nombreuses ruptures de ton qui ne permettent pas de rire pleinement des sc\u00e8nes comiques ou d\u2019\u00eatre pleinement \u00e9mu des sc\u00e8nes dramatiques \u00e0 mesure que l\u2019intrigue avance. M\u00eame si Lakeith Stanfield est tr\u00e8s convaincant dans son (double) r\u00f4le principal au c\u00f4t\u00e9 d\u2019un casting \u00e9galement de qualit\u00e9 \u2013 avec Anna Diop, Teyena Taylor, RJ Cyler, David Oyelowo, Tom Glynn-Carney, James McAvoy, Benedict Cumberbatch ou encore Omar Sy en esclave gladiateur \u2013 la gestion du ton fait que le spectateur ne sait trop comment se placer par rapport au r\u00e9cit.<\/p><p>Les sc\u00e8nes sont alors moins marquantes ou m\u00e9morables que dans \u00ab\u00a0The Harder They Fall\u00a0\u00bb m\u00eame si la BO, enti\u00e8rement compos\u00e9e par le r\u00e9alisateur, reste elle excellente. C\u2019est l\u2019une des plus vari\u00e9e et dense de l\u2019ann\u00e9e, certainement, nous offrant un film (notamment produit par Jay-Z) en musique non-stop avec aussi bien des compositions orchestrales, que de la pop, du rap, du funk ou encore une s\u00e9quence dans\u00e9e en plein J\u00e9rusalem.<\/p><p>Il y a fort \u00e0 parier que personne n\u2019aura vraiment la m\u00eame r\u00e9action pour chaque sc\u00e8ne sur un tel film, m\u00eame si dans l\u2019ensemble, on peut dire que tout ne fonctionne pas parfaitement, et certainement pas aussi bien que son pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent. The man named Clarence thus chooses knowledge over faith, and his only certainty right now is that he has less than a month to repay his debt to Jedediah the Terrible. So, to sum up the story and the narrative shifts of such a film, this is the story of an unbeliever who finds faith in the miracle that his life oddly becomes&#8230;<\/p><p>Jeymes Samuel&rsquo;s second feature, \u201cThe Book of Clarence\u201d is (at least from a certain point of view) a religious movie, a (semi)biblical tale that once again mixes styles with a light tone and an Afro touch. The British director is first and foremost a musician, and this was clearly felt in his directorial debut released two years ago on <em>Netflix<\/em>, \u201cThe Harder They Fall\u201d, which offered a Blaxploitation-style, anachronistic retelling of the Western myth, where duels were played out not to the beat of bullets, but of notes. Those who have seen it will already be less thrown by his atypical style to embark on his new film, an audacious project as he tackles a biblical retelling with the same musical blend of styles. But what worked particularly well with the Western, doesn&rsquo;t quite walk as well on water this time.<\/p><p>\u201cThe Book of Clarence\u201d offers a surprising arc from Christian parody (a la Monty Python&rsquo;s &lsquo;Life of Brian&rsquo;) to a purely biblical story, with many shifts in tone along the way. The religious story could be seen as humorous or blasphemous, but it certainly mixes styles, with re-enactments of crucifixion scenes and the Last Supper, for example, as well as a Mary Magdalene in a \u201cBen-Hur\u201d-style chariot race.<\/p><p>There are therefore funny moments, and more critical moments of both religion and society \u2013 including a contemporary commentary on the clash between the black population and the police in the US \u2013 as well as other, much more serious moments. Some may see it as a provocation, others as a fundamentally biblical tale, and the rest will find their own conception of somewhere in between.<\/p><p>The whole thing is uneven, due to the lack of interest in the first part and, above all, to the too many tonal shifts that prevent us from fully laughing at the funny scenes or fully appreciating the dramatic ones as the plot unfolds. Although Lakeith Stanfield is very convincing in his (double) lead role, alongside an equally talented cast \u2013 including Anna Diop, Teyena Taylor, RJ Cyler, David Oyelowo, Tom Glynn-Carney, James McAvoy, Benedict Cumberbatch and Omar Sy as a gladiatorial slave \u2013 the way the tone is conveyed means that viewers don&rsquo;t really know where they stand in relation to the story.<\/p><p>The scenes are then less striking or memorable than in \u201cThe Harder They Fall\u201d, although the soundtrack, composed entirely by the director, remains absolutely wonderful. It&rsquo;s certainly one of the most diverse and packed of the year, delivering a film (produced by Jay-Z, among others) with non-stop music, ranging from orchestral compositions to pop, rap and funk, as well as a dance sequence in the middle of Jerusalem.<\/p><p>Chances are, nobody will really have the same reaction to every scene in a film like this, even if overall, it&rsquo;s fair to say that not everything works perfectly, and certainly not as well as his previous film. It certainly doesn&rsquo;t blow you away and leaves you a little confused, but at least the film still leaves you questioning afterwards, and it does deserve credit for being bold and challenging.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Rapha\u00ebl Sallenave<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section
