Vous l\u2019aurez compris, nous sommes en Inde pour ce thriller policier pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 cette ann\u00e9e au Festival de Cannes \u2013 dans la s\u00e9lection Un certain regard \u2013 aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de deux autres films indiens mettant comme lui en sc\u00e8ne des personnages f\u00e9minins se d\u00e9battant avec leur d\u00e9sir de libert\u00e9.<\/p><p>Premier film de fiction de Sandhya Suri, il est le r\u00e9sultat d\u2019une volont\u00e9\u00a0 de la r\u00e9alisatrice anglo-indienne (et fran\u00e7aise dor\u00e9navant \u00e9galement) de r\u00e9aliser un documentaire sur les violences faites aux femmes. Mais lorsqu\u2019elle voit une femme polici\u00e8re lors des grandes manifestations f\u00e9minines de 2012 suite \u00e0 un viol collectif dans un bus, elle se demande ce que pouvait bien penser cette femme des manifestantes, de sa condition, et de sa profession. Quel pouvoir la femme exerce-t-elle alors en tant que telle ? Et quel pouvoir l\u2019uniforme exerce-t-il sur elle ? Cherchant donc \u00e0 adopter son point de vue, cette id\u00e9e de documentaire s\u2019est transform\u00e9e en une fiction, en un polar, et \u00ab Santosh \u00bb est n\u00e9 !<\/p><p>C\u2019est l\u2019histoire d\u2019une jeune femme qui h\u00e9rite de la charge de son d\u00e9funt mari par une loi dite de \u2018recrutement compassionnel\u2019 et qui devient ainsi polici\u00e8re par n\u00e9cessit\u00e9. Au gr\u00e9 d\u2019une enqu\u00eate sur la mort d\u2019une adolescente dalit issue d\u2019une communaut\u00e9 pauvre et m\u00e9pris\u00e9e, la r\u00e9alisatrice sonde la violence de son pays jusque dans l\u2019\u00e2me de sa protagoniste.<\/p><p>Ce polar en langue hindi et co-produit \u00e0 l\u2019international (BBC, MK2, Haut et Court) est un sombre portrait de l\u2019Inde \u00e0 travers la col\u00e8re des femmes. C\u2019est l\u2019histoire d\u2019une impasse qui d\u00e9marre comme un drame social pour basculer ensuite en thriller politique. L\u2019enqu\u00eate polici\u00e8re n\u2019est en fait que le cadre du r\u00e9cit o\u00f9 \u2013 \u00e0 l\u2019image d\u2019un film comme \u00ab Le Caire Confidentiel \u00bb pour l\u2019\u00c9gypte \u2013 elle marque plus finalement pour son impact politique et social que pour son suspense ou sa r\u00e9solution. L\u2019intrigue m\u00eale donc habilement thriller pur et drame social pour explorer l\u2019univers trouble du r\u00e9gime nationaliste du BJP et analyser avec subtilit\u00e9 les m\u00e9canismes de la violence. Le film nous plonge dans cette soci\u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9touff\u00e9e par le syst\u00e8me des castes, l\u2019intol\u00e9rance religieuse, la misogynie et le patriarcat.<\/p><p>Contrairement \u00e0 beaucoup de films o\u00f9 la corruption et la violence sont des ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes ext\u00e9rieurs aux protagonistes, ici le film ose aborder cette critique comme une potentialit\u00e9 universelle. Sandhya Suri r\u00e9duit ainsi par son cadre narratif les \u00e9lites \u00e0 un arri\u00e8re-plan syst\u00e9mique dont le poids se fait sentir tout du long de la trajectoire tr\u00e8s intime de sa protagoniste qui se r\u00e9v\u00e8le sous l\u2019uniforme et n\u2019aime pas n\u00e9cessairement tout ce qu\u2019elle y d\u00e9couvre : d\u2019abord spectatrice elle devient bient\u00f4t partie prenante des m\u00e9canismes d\u2019un syst\u00e8me. Une atmosph\u00e8re g\u00e9n\u00e9rale qu\u2019elle transmet jusque dans des sc\u00e8nes quelque peu d\u00e9connect\u00e9es de l\u2019enqu\u00eate elle-m\u00eame comme la sc\u00e8ne du restaurant o\u00f9 une femme que les hommes dans le pays d\u00e9visagent \u00e0 longueur de journ\u00e9e externalise sa col\u00e8re en engloutissant et recrachant imm\u00e9diatement son plat pour forcer l\u2019homme \u00e0 baisser les yeux.<\/p><p>Avec ses d\u00e9cors accabl\u00e9s de chaleur, jouant sur la lumi\u00e8re naturelle des ext\u00e9rieurs et les clairs-obscurs des int\u00e9rieurs, c\u2019est donc avec une approche tr\u00e8s documentariste qu\u2019elle met en sc\u00e8ne sa protagoniste dont les \u00e9motions sourdes sont brillamment interpr\u00e9t\u00e9es par Shahana Goswami aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s notamment d\u2019une Sunita Rajwar dont le personnage est laiss\u00e9 volontairement ambigu\u00eb dans une certaine nuance de gris.<\/p><p>Film noir tr\u00e8s ma\u00eetris\u00e9 techniquement, \u00ab\u00a0Santosh\u00a0\u00bb offre un r\u00e9cit marquant (avec quelques sc\u00e8nes dures) qui montre un bel exemple d\u2019\u0153uvre lisible pour un public europ\u00e9en et indien (un \u00e9quilibre difficile \u00e0 trouver), et une belle occasion de d\u00e9couvrir un cin\u00e9ma d\u2019auteur indien peu connu chez nous\u00a0!<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Rapha\u00ebl Sallenave<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42480e6 elementor-widget__width-initial exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"42480e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\">There are two kinds of untouchables in this country: those no one wants to touch, and those no one can touch! As you can imagine, we&rsquo;re in India for this crime thriller, presented this year at the Cannes Film Festival \u2013 in the <em>Un certain regard<\/em> selection \u2013 alongside two other Indian films featuring female characters wrestling with their desire for freedom.<\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><p>Sandhya Suri&rsquo;s first feature film, it&rsquo;s the result of the Anglo-Indian (and now also French) director&rsquo;s desire to make a documentary about violence against women. But when she saw a female police officer during the mass women&rsquo;s protests of 2012 following a gang rape on a bus, she wondered what this woman could possibly think of the demonstrators, of her condition, and of her profession. What power does the woman wield as such? And what power does the uniform wield over her? Seeking to adopt her point of view, this documentary idea turned into a fictional thriller, and \u201cSantosh\u201d was born!<\/p><p>This is the story of a young woman who inherits her late husband&rsquo;s duties under a law known as \u2018compassionate recruitment\u2019, and becomes a policewoman out of necessity. Through her investigation into the death of a Dalit teenager from a poor and despised community, the director delves into the violence of her country, right down to the very soul of her protagonist.<\/p><p>This Hindi-language thriller, co-produced internationally (<em>BBC<\/em>, <em>MK2<\/em>, <em>Haut et Court<\/em>), is a dark portrayal of India through the anger of its women. It&rsquo;s the story of a dead end that starts out as a social drama and then shifts into a political thriller. The police investigation is merely the framework for the story, where \u2013 much like a film such as \u201cThe Nile Hilton Incident\u201d in Egypt \u2013 it ultimately stands out more for its political and social impact than for its suspense or resolution. The plot skillfully blends pure thriller and social drama, exploring the murky world of the BJP&rsquo;s nationalist regime and subtly analyzing the dynamics of violence. The film brings us into a society suffocated by the caste system, religious intolerance, misogyny and patriarchy.<\/p><p>Unlike many films where corruption and violence are external phenomena to the protagonists, here the film dares to address this criticism as a universal possibility. Sandhya Suri&rsquo;s narrative framework thereby reduces the elites to a systemic backdrop, the weight of which is felt throughout the very personal journey of her protagonist, who emerges from the uniform and doesn&rsquo;t necessarily like everything she discovers: at first a spectator, she soon becomes a player in the inner workings of a system. She conveys this general atmosphere even in scenes that are somewhat disconnected from the investigation itself, such as the scene in the restaurant, where a woman who is stared at all day long by the men in this country externalizes her anger by gulping down her food and immediately spitting it out, forcing the man to look down.<\/p><p>With its heat-weathered settings, combining the natural light of exteriors and the chiaroscuro of interiors, it is with a very documentary approach that she stages her protagonist, whose muted emotions are brilliantly interpreted by Shahana Goswami, alongside a Sunita Rajwar whose character is deliberately left ambiguous in a certain shade of gray.<\/p><p>This technically masterful film noir, \u201cSantosh\u201d, offers a striking story (with some harsh scenes) that is a beautiful example of a movie accessible to both European and Indian audiences (a difficult balance to strike), and a great opportunity to discover an Indian auteur genre that is little known over here!<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Rapha\u00ebl
