pr\u00e9sidentielle am\u00e9ricaine la plus rinc\u00e9e de l\u2019histoire entre un m\u00e9ga-fou et un giga-s\u00e9nile o\u00f9 le vote le plus logique pour toutes et tous semblerait sans \u00e9quivoque n\u2019\u00eatre autre que le vote blanc (au risque de se voir traiter de raciste)\u00a0; <em>HBO Max<\/em> nous proposait ces derni\u00e8res semaines une nouvelle s\u00e9rie politique sur quatre femmes journalistes entre concurrence et amiti\u00e9 sur la route de la primaire d\u00e9mocrate.<\/p><p>Le titre fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 l\u2019essai de Timothy Crouse paru en 1973 \u00ab\u00a0The Boys on the Bus\u00a0\u00bb qui documentait les coulisses du travail des journalistes suivant la campagne \u00e9lectorale de 1972 (qui vit Nixon \u00eatre r\u00e9\u00e9lu avant de d\u00e9missionner suite au scandale du Watergate). Parmi eux se trouvait Hunter S. Thompson, le chef de file du journalisme gonzo (mouvement d\u00e9fiant la sacro-sainte objectivit\u00e9 journalistique au profit d\u2019une approche plus immersive). La mythologie de cette campagne et de ce questionnement journalistique se retrouve dans \u00ab\u00a0The Girls on the Bus\u00a0\u00bb qui prend acte de la f\u00e9minisation de la profession autour de ce quatuor plut\u00f4t arch\u00e9typal avec en t\u00eate notre plume nerveuse d\u2019un grand quotidien new-yorkais, litt\u00e9ralement hant\u00e9e par la fant\u00f4me de Thompson\u00a0; une reporter chevronn\u00e9e, cynique et h\u00e9riti\u00e8re\u00a0; une pr\u00e9sentatrice afro-am\u00e9ricaine d\u2019une cha\u00eene TV conservatrice type <em>Fox News<\/em>\u00a0: et enfin une jeune influenceuse moderne et novice en politique.<\/p><p>D\u00e9velopp\u00e9e par la sc\u00e9nariste Julie Plec (Vampire Diaries) et la journaliste Amy Chozick, la s\u00e9rie s\u2019inspire de l\u2019exp\u00e9rience de cette derni\u00e8re en tant que journaliste \u2018embarqu\u00e9e\u2019 aupr\u00e8s d\u2019Hillary Clinton. \u00ab\u00a0The Girls on the Bus\u00a0\u00bb m\u00e9lange alors la politique, l\u2019humour, le drame voire le thriller, et la romance. Elle s\u2019impose ainsi comme une s\u00e9rie politique aux airs de <em>soap opera<\/em>, au ton assez l\u00e9ger et p\u00e9tillant, tout en maintenant un cap ne l\u2019emp\u00eachant pas de prendre son sujet au s\u00e9rieux. C\u2019est dans l\u2019ensemble un hymne \u00e0 la sororit\u00e9 et au dialogue qui aurait probablement gagn\u00e9 \u00e0 approfondir son cadre et ses personnages.<\/p><p>La force du r\u00e9cit r\u00e9side en effet dans sa plaidoirie de la d\u00e9polarisation id\u00e9ologique et des vertus du dialogue en construisant progressivement une solidarit\u00e9 naissante entre les quatre journalistes rivales de bords politiques extr\u00eamement diff\u00e9rents. Elles ne font ainsi qu\u2019un lorsqu\u2019il s\u2019agit d\u2019affirmer leurs ambitions \u00e0 la barbe de leurs patrons ou de s\u2019entraider lorsqu\u2019elles se heurtent \u00e0 des restrictions professionnelles ou aux lois de certains Etats. La s\u00e9rie joue alors sur une guerre des sexes et des g\u00e9n\u00e9rations et montre que les divisions dans notre culture actuelle du clash sont parfois solubles dans la relation humaine. Avec un bon casting cr\u00e9dible dans l\u2019ensemble, la s\u00e9rie fonctionne bien quand elle met en sc\u00e8ne ses protagonistes dans leur cheminement contrast\u00e9 mais collectif.<\/p><p>En revanche, les intrigues individuelles s\u2019av\u00e8rent plus faibles, en particulier pour l\u2019influenceuse et la pr\u00e9sentatrice afro-am\u00e9ricaine d\u2019une cha\u00eene ouvertement affubl\u00e9e de racisme (ce qui est en soi un concept tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ressant sur l\u2019image que veut et doit donner le m\u00e9dia). Mais les profondes divergences de points de vue entre cette derni\u00e8re et ses coll\u00e8gues sont trait\u00e9s trop en surface, comme des simples d\u00e9saccords, pour \u00eatre facilement outrepass\u00e9s par la force de l\u2019entraide et de l\u2019amiti\u00e9. On passe malheureusement plus de temps sur son mariage que sur ses v\u00e9ritables positions politiques et \u00e9conomiques. Dans l\u2019ensemble, c\u2019est la dimension politique qui semble trop en surface et qui manque de profondeur. Alors, certes, la s\u00e9rie cherche \u00e0 proposer une intrigue l\u00e9g\u00e8re et amusante dans un cadre politique, plus que v\u00e9ritablement plonger dans les m\u00e9andres de la politique, mais en pleine campagne pr\u00e9sidentielle 2024, l\u2019environnement s\u2019y pr\u00eate mal et on en attend donc plus de ce c\u00f4t\u00e9-l\u00e0 (m\u00eame si elle y fait astucieusement quelques r\u00e9f\u00e9rences \u00e0 l\u2019image du \u2018vieux\u2019 candidat).<\/p><p>En tant que com\u00e9die f\u00e9minine sur le journalisme de campagne, la s\u00e9rie se r\u00e9v\u00e8le donc assez bonne, en tant que r\u00e9cit journalistique \u00e9galement (bien qu\u2019elle ajoute une dimension thriller un peu \u00e0 contre-courant), mais c\u2019est bien dans sa dimension politique qu\u2019elle p\u00eache. Among them was Hunter S. Thompson, the leader of gonzo journalism (a movement challenging the sanctity of journalistic objectivity in favor of a more immersive approach). The mythology of this campaign and this journalistic questioning are captured in \u201cThe Girls on the Bus\u201d, which reflects the feminization of the profession around this rather archetypal quartet, headed by our nervous writer from a major New York City daily, literally haunted by Thompson&rsquo;s ghost; a seasoned reporter, cynical and heiress; an African-American anchorwoman from a conservative Fox News-type TV channel; and finally, a young, modern influencer and political novice.<\/p><p>Developed by screenwriter Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries) and journalist Amy Chozick, the series is based on the latter&rsquo;s experience as a journalist \u2018on the bus\u2019 with Hillary Clinton. So, \u201cThe Girls on the Bus\u201d blends politics, humor, drama and even thriller, with romance. In this way, it establishes itself as a soap opera-like political series with a light, playful tone, while still taking its subject matter seriously. Overall, it is a tribute to sisterhood and dialogue that would probably have benefited from a more in-depth setting and characters.<\/p><p>The strength of the story lies in its championing of ideological depolarization and of the merits of dialogue, gradually building a budding solidarity between the four rival journalists from extremely different political backgrounds. They become one when it comes to asserting their ambitions in the face of their bosses, or helping each other out when they come up against professional constraints or the laws of certain states. The series then explores a war between the sexes and between generations, showing that the divisions in today&rsquo;s clash culture are sometimes solvable in human relationships. With a good, credible cast on the whole, the series works well when it shows its protagonists on their contrasting but collective paths.<\/p><p>However, the individual storylines are weaker, especially for the influencer and the African-American anchorwoman of a network openly labeled as racist (which is in itself a very interesting concept about the image the media wants and needs to convey). But the profound differences of opinion between the latter and her colleagues are treated too superficially, as mere disagreements, to be easily overridden by the strength of mutual support and friendship. Unfortunately, more time is spent on her marriage than on her real political and economic stances. Overall, it&rsquo;s the political dimension that seems too much on the surface and lacks depth. Admittedly, the series aims to offer a light, fun plot within a political framework, rather than really delving into the intricacies of politics, but in the midst of the 2024 presidential campaign, this environment doesn&rsquo;t lend itself well to this, and so we expect more from it (although it cleverly makes a few references to it as with the &lsquo;old man&rsquo; candidate).<\/p><p>As a women&rsquo;s comedy about campaign journalism, the series proves to be quite good, and as a journalistic story as well (although it adds a thriller dimension that goes a little against the tide), but it&rsquo;s in its political dimension that it fails. Although lacking in substance, this first season remains commendable, but the journey of these &lsquo;President&rsquo;s women&rsquo; will come to an end here, as Max has decided not to renew the
