Des adaptations le plus souvent sous le format t\u00e9l\u00e9visuel d\u00fb \u00e0 la longueur d\u2019un r\u00e9cit bien \u00e9pais. Une fresque vengeresse sur plus d\u2019une d\u00e9cennie et que les r\u00e9alisateurs Matthieu Delaporte et Alexandre De La Patelli\u00e8re distillent ici en un seul et vibrant long-m\u00e9trage.<\/p><p>Edmond Dant\u00e8s, est un homme venu du peuple et qui parvient par son courage et ses efforts \u00e0 se hisser capitaine de bateau. Une ascension sociale rare dont les jalousies vont le condamner \u00e0 bien pire que la mort\u00a0: l\u2019oubli. Faussement accus\u00e9 de Bonapartisme et arr\u00eat\u00e9 le jour de son mariage, il est enferm\u00e9 et d\u00e9clar\u00e9 aux yeux de tous comme mort. Dans les cellules de l\u2019\u00eele d\u2019If, Edmond Dant\u00e8s fait la rencontre de L\u2019abb\u00e9 Faria qui lui confie les secrets de l&rsquo;\u00eele de Monte-Cristo o\u00f9 repose un \u00e9norme tr\u00e9sor, et la possibilit\u00e9 s\u2019il s\u2019\u00e9chappe, d\u2019assouvir sa vengeance.<\/p><p>Tout en \u00e9tant fid\u00e8le au r\u00e9cit, les deux r\u00e9alisateurs parviennent \u00e0 rendre spectaculaire un r\u00e9cit pourtant bas\u00e9 sur une vengeance patiemment orchestr\u00e9e. Rien n\u2019est perdu, ni le charme ni la langue que les auteurs adaptent avec une subtile modernit\u00e9, alliant th\u00e9\u00e2tralit\u00e9 et romanesque. Le film ne souffre d\u2019aucune longueur tant les tableaux s&rsquo;encha\u00eenent avec un redoutable montage. M\u00eame si on peut y voir une industrialisation du genre dans la continuit\u00e9 des \u00ab\u00a0Trois mousquetaires\u00a0\u00bb, ce \u00ab\u00a0Comte de Monte-Cristo\u00a0\u00bb attrape avec bien plus de po\u00e9sie la dramaturgie d\u2019une \u00e9poque.<\/p><p>On ne peut \u00e9videmment ausculter le film sans souligner la puissance de jeu de Pierre Niney qui insuffle \u00e0 Dant\u00e8s une \u00e9paisseur o\u00f9 se c\u00f4toient force et faiblesses, une prouesse de jeu jusque-l\u00e0 peu explor\u00e9e dans les diff\u00e9rentes adaptations. On rel\u00e8vera \u00e9galement une relecture bienvenue de la relation entre Hayd\u00e9e et Edmond, une relation ambigu\u00eb dans le livre qui appara\u00eet ici et avec plus de force comme une relation p\u00e8re-fille. Une relecture qui, m\u00eame si elle fr\u00f4le le manich\u00e9isme, offre une tr\u00e8s belle adaptation des six volumes d\u2019une \u0153uvre colossale.<\/p><p>C\u2019est un film de spectacle qui ne s&rsquo;oublie pas dans une recherche d\u2019esth\u00e9tique hollywoodienne et propose \u00e0 l\u2019inverse de l&rsquo;adaptation r\u00e9cente des \u00ab\u00a0Trois mousquetaires\u00a0\u00bb, une lecture po\u00e9tique et sensible. Most of these adaptations have been made for television, due to the sheer length of the original story. This time, directors Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre De La Patelli\u00e8re bring this decade-long tale of vengeance to life in a single, vibrant feature film.<\/p><p>Edmond Dant\u00e8s is a man of the people who, through courage and hard work, succeeds in becoming a ship&rsquo;s captain. A rare social achievement whose envy condemned him to a fate far worse than death: oblivion. Falsely accused of Bonapartism and arrested on the day of his wedding, he was locked up and declared dead for all to see. In the prison cells of Ch\u00e2teau d\u2019If, Edmond Dant\u00e8s meets Abb\u00e9 Faria, who tells him the secrets of the Monte-Cristo Island, where a huge treasure lies, and the chance to exact his revenge if he manages to get away.<\/p><p>While remaining true to the story, the two directors succeed in making a story based on carefully orchestrated revenge spectacular. Nothing is lost, neither the charm nor the idiom, which the filmmakers adapt with a subtle modernity, combining theatricality and romance. The film is never too long, as the scenes flow into one another with terrific editing. Although it might be seen as an industrialization of the genre in the wake of \u201cThe Three Musketeers\u201d, this \u201cCount of Monte Cristo\u201d captures the dramaturgy of an era far more poetically.<\/p><p>Of course, we can&rsquo;t review the film without highlighting the power of Pierre Niney&rsquo;s performance, which imbues Dant\u00e8s with a depth that combines strength and weakness, an acting prowess previously little explored in the various adaptations. There&rsquo;s also a welcome new take on the relationship between Hayd\u00e9e and Edmond, an ambiguous one in the book that appears here more strongly as a father-daughter relationship. A fresh interpretation which, though bordering on Manicheanism, offers a very good adaptation of the six volumes of this massive work of literature.<\/p><p>This is a spectacular picture that doesn&rsquo;t lose itself in a quest for Hollywood aesthetics and, unlike the recent adaptation of \u201cThe Three Musketeers\u201d, offers a poetic and sensitive portrayal. While it may only come close to the directing genius of Rappeneau (\u201cCyrano de Bergerac\u201d, \u201cThe Horseman on the Roof\u201d), \u201cThe Count of Monte Cristo\u201d will surely delight all
