Nous sommes en 2006, le Roi du Bhoutan d\u00e9cide d\u2019abdiquer en vue des premi\u00e8res \u00e9lections de son pays. Ce petit pays enclav\u00e9 entre les deux g\u00e9ants chinois et indien, quelque part dans la cha\u00eene himalayenne, s\u2019ouvre ainsi \u00e0 la modernisation et donc \u00e0 la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision, \u00e0 internet, et \u2026 \u00e0 la d\u00e9mocratie ! Mais les mots \u201cd\u00e9mocratie\u201d et \u201c\u00e9lections\u201d paraissent tout aussi abscons \u00e0 certains qu\u2019un n\u00e9buleux jargon m\u00e9dical, il appara\u00eet alors n\u00e9cessaire d\u2019apprendre au peuple \u00e0 voter via des \u00e9lections blanches organis\u00e9es deux ans avant les v\u00e9ritables scrutins l\u00e9gislatifs. Mais qu\u2019est-ce donc que la p\u00e9dagogie politique pour une population majoritairement rurale qui vit selon ses bienheureuses traditions ? C\u2019est simple, voter comme les occidentaux, c\u2019est apprendre d\u00e9j\u00e0 le fait m\u00eame de voter (oui \u00e7a s\u2019acquiert et s\u2019apprend), ensuite apprendre l\u2019opposition des points de vue, et enfin apprendre \u00e0 ha\u00efr et \u00eatre d\u00e9sobligeant. Quant au titre, il renvoie \u00e0 un moine qui cherche une arme pour son Lama en vue de la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie \u00e9lectorale pour des myst\u00e9rieuses raisons qui seront le fil conducteur de cette fable politique et comique.<\/p><p>C\u2019est une satire contemporaine, salutaire et d\u00e9paysante pour nous occidentaux. Bien qu\u2019il ne soit techniquement pas r\u00e9volutionnaire, c\u2019est un film qui propose un cheminement hors des sentiers battus \u2013 au gr\u00e9 des pas de notre moine-protagoniste \u2013 tr\u00e8s proche du documentaire (avec des acteurs non-professionnels) qui prend plusieurs d\u00e9tours en termes de ton. D\u2019abord extr\u00eamement r\u00e9aliste et plut\u00f4t contemplatif avec de longs plans sur la beaut\u00e9 de ces paysages montagneux, le film devient progressivement plus politique et progressivement plus dr\u00f4le. Ce n\u2019est pas v\u00e9ritablement une com\u00e9die, le rythme \u00e9tant bien trop zen, ni \u00e0 proprement parler un film absurde, mais son message est souvent communiqu\u00e9 par l\u2019absurde, notamment via le personnage de l\u2019homme am\u00e9ricain. Avec tendresse et fantaisie, \u00ab\u00a0Le Moine et le Fusil\u00a0\u00bb communique son message politique entre situations burlesques et \u00e9l\u00e9ments symboliques, avec une fin particuli\u00e8rement r\u00e9ussie\u00a0!<\/p><p>A mesure que le film devient de plus en plus comique, la symbolique devient \u00e9galement plus forte. La modernit\u00e9 occidentale doit en effet apprendre \u00e0 cette population \u00e0 se diviser \u00e0 l\u2019image du fusil central de l\u2019intrigue datant justement de la guerre de s\u00e9cession\u00a0! C\u2019est une satire politique qui parle finalement de nous \u2013 et en particulier de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 am\u00e9ricaine \u2013 \u00e0 travers ce miroir de nos soci\u00e9t\u00e9 contemporaines. Mais c\u2019est bien s\u00fbr aussi et avant tout un conte sur la lente accession \u00e0 la d\u00e9mocratie d\u2019un pays qui adopte par n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 des fonctionnements qui lui sont \u00e9trangers. A l\u2019image de son pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent film \u00ab\u00a0L\u2019\u00e9cole du bout du monde\u00a0\u00bb, Pawo Choyning Dorji fait de son pays un d\u00e9cor pour ses fables r\u00e9alistes qui interrogent les valeurs nationales, le rapport \u00e0 la tradition, et au progr\u00e8s. The year is 2006, and the King of Bhutan steps down to pave the way for his country&rsquo;s first elections. This small country, landlocked between the two giants of China and India, somewhere in the Himalayan mountains, is thereby opening up to the modern world, and thus to the TV, the Internet and &#8230; democracy! But with the words \u00ab\u00a0democracy\u00a0\u00bb and \u00ab\u00a0elections\u00a0\u00bb seeming as obscure to some as a nebulous medical gibberish, it seems necessary to teach the people how to vote by holding mock elections two years before the actual parliamentary ballots. But what is political pedagogy for a largely rural population that lives according to its blessed traditions? Quite simply, voting like Westerners means learning the very act of voting (yes, it must be taught and earned), then learning about conflicting points of view, and finally learning how to hate and be rude. As for the title, it refers to a monk who is looking for a weapon for his Lama in preparation for the election ceremony, for mysterious reasons that will be the main thread of this political and comic fable.<\/p><p>This is a contemporary satire, wholesome and refreshing for us Westerners. Although technically not groundbreaking, this is a film that offers an unusual journey \u2013 following in the footsteps of our monk-protagonist \u2013 very close to a documentary (with non-professional actors) that takes several detours in tone. Initially extremely realistic and rather contemplative, with long shots on the beauty of these mountainous landscapes, the film gradually becomes increasingly more political and funnier. This is not really a comedy, the pace being far too Zen, nor is it strictly speaking an absurd movie, but its message is often conveyed through the absurd, especially through the figure of the American man. With tenderness and fancy, \u201cThe Monk and the Gun\u201d delivers its political message between hilarious situations and symbolic elements, with a particularly strong ending!<\/p><p>As the film becomes increasingly funny, the symbolic value also grows stronger. Western modernity must indeed teach this population to be divided, as illustrated by the plot&rsquo;s central rifle, which dates back to the Civil War! This is a political satire that ultimately reflects on us \u2013 and American society in particular \u2013 through this mirror of our contemporary societies. But it is also, and above all, a tale of a country&rsquo;s slow transition to democracy, as it takes on unfamiliar ways of doing things out of necessity. As in his previous film \u201cLunana: A Yak in the Classroom\u201d, Pawo Choyning Dorji uses his own country as a backdrop for his realistic fables, which question national values, as well as the relationship between tradition and progress. In \u201cThe Monk and the Gun\u201d, rural life once again sees the arrival of change, allowing us to reflect on the very principle of public action, and to think about elections and politics in a
