Cette fresque de pr\u00e8s de trois heures vise aussi \u00e0 redorer le blason d\u2019un genre typiquement am\u00e9ricain qui s\u2019est quelque peu \u00e9teint de lui-m\u00eame ces derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies. Pour cela, et surfant sur la vague \u00ab Yellowstone \u00bb qui l\u2019a remis sur le devant de la sc\u00e8ne, Kevin Costner mise sur le pouvoir de fascination du western et la force de ses images en tentant d\u2019associer un style tr\u00e8s classique dans sa mise en sc\u00e8ne et son ton \u00e0 une modernit\u00e9 dans son approche th\u00e9matique et narrative \u2026 pour un r\u00e9sultat plus que mitig\u00e9 !<\/p><p>L\u2019une des marques de fabrique du genre reste \u00e9videmment les visuels avec ses grands espaces, et c\u2019est un \u00e9l\u00e9ment caract\u00e9ristique du western particuli\u00e8rement mis \u00e0 l\u2019honneur ici avec ses paysages montagneux et d\u00e9sertiques nous transportant du Montana \u00e0 l\u2019Arizona. Mais un western c\u2019est aussi souvent une histoire de violence et d\u2019action, et cette dynamique est \u00e9galement r\u00e9ussie gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une tr\u00e8s belle sc\u00e8ne de massacre Apache et de pi\u00e8ge asphyxiant dans un souterrain. Le film se structure ainsi par une forme de parall\u00e9lisme d\u00e9butant et se cl\u00f4turant par un massacre, tissant ainsi des liens entre les groupes de personnages\u00a0: tout le monde y perd des proches, doit faire des choix de route, ainsi que d\u2019alli\u00e9s. Si le film d\u00e9bute sous un point de vue tr\u00e8s fordien, il s\u2019\u00e9quilibre peu \u00e0 peu pour finalement filmer les cow-boys et les Indiens sur un plan d\u2019\u00e9galit\u00e9 o\u00f9 chaque camp s\u2019opposant est \u00e9galement divis\u00e9 par un conflit int\u00e9rieur. Le souci ne vient donc pas du point de vue de l\u2019intrigue, mais plus de son d\u00e9veloppement.<\/p><p>Le terme\u00a0\u201csaga\u201d utilis\u00e9 dans le titre (un peu \u00e0 rallonge) fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 l\u2019ampleur de ce projet en quatre films qui s\u2019apparente bien plus \u00e0 une s\u00e9rie qu\u2019\u00e0 un format cin\u00e9ma. Le premier volet, du haut de ses trois heures, se limite ainsi uniquement \u00e0 une introduction\u00a0: ce n\u2019est qu\u2019une tr\u00e8s (et trop) longue pr\u00e9sentation des personnages qui multiplie les intrigues et les protagonistes pour finir sans vraie conclusion simplement sur un \u00e9clatement narratif. Ce \u00ab\u00a0Chapitre 1\u00a0\u00bb ouvre beaucoup de pistes mais n\u2019en exploite vraiment aucune en r\u00e9ussissant \u00e0 faire \u00e0 la fois tra\u00eener l\u2019intrigue en passant d\u2019un groupe \u00e0 l\u2019autre sans les connecter, et pr\u00e9cipiter son d\u00e9veloppement avec des ellipses qui n\u2019approfondissent pas les personnages ou leurs relations.<\/p><p>Le personnage principal que joue lui-m\u00eame Costner n\u2019arrive d\u2019ailleurs qu\u2019apr\u00e8s 1h30 pour n\u2019avoir au final que deux s\u00e9quences (une d\u2019introduction et une de fuite) avec deux sc\u00e8nes chacune entrecoup\u00e9e d\u2019ellipses qui font que non seulement on pourrait s\u2019y perdre mais surtout on n\u2019est absolument pas investi dans le parcours de ces personnes pourtant tr\u00e8s vari\u00e9es. A l\u2019image de tout cela, le film conclut sur ni plus ni moins qu\u2019une (encore une fois, trop longue) bande-annonce de sa propre suite, avec un montage mettant en sc\u00e8ne les enjeux qui attendent toute cette myriade de personnages. En tant qu\u2019introduction (certes trop longue, mais n\u00e9anmoins vaste et intrigante), ce \u00ab Chapitre 1 \u00bb pourrait donc tout \u00e0 fait convenir, mais ce \u00ab Horizon \u00bb ne fonctionne tout simplement pas en tant que film \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re.<\/p><p>C\u2019est bien simple, il est loin d\u2019\u00eatre palpitant en s\u2019\u00e9parpillant sans cesse et en ne parachevant pas le d\u00e9veloppement de ses multiples groupes de personnages. On a un peu l\u2019impression de voir une succession de qu\u00eates secondaires sur \u00ab\u00a0Red Dead Redemption\u00a0\u00bb. En somme c\u2019est un lourd \u00e9chec narratif, d\u2019autant que les sc\u00e8nes sont r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement trop longues souvent dues \u00e0 des dialogues qui tra\u00eenent et ne facilitent pas un jeu d\u2019acteur qui s\u2019av\u00e8re assez in\u00e9gal sur l\u2019ensemble (sans compter, mais c\u2019est un choix assum\u00e9, que la petite focale ne nous rapproche pas de ces personnages).<\/p><p>Conjuguant les formats cin\u00e9ma et s\u00e9rie, \u00ab\u00a0Horizon, chapitre 1\u00a0\u00bb est une \u0153uvre difficile \u00e0 juger en elle-m\u00eame car elle n\u2019est pas une entit\u00e9 finie. Ce qui est s\u00fbr, c\u2019est qu\u2019il s\u2019agit d\u2019un r\u00e9cit ample et ambitieux bien que trop long et trop lent, mais qui r\u00e9ussit \u00e9tonnamment \u00e0 nous donner envie de voir la suite, y compris gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son montage final (qui n\u2019a, certes, rien \u00e0 faire l\u00e0). This nearly three-hour epic also aims to bring back to life a typically American genre that has somewhat died out on its own in the past few decades. To this end, and capitalizing on the \u201cYellowstone\u201d success that put him back in the spotlight, Kevin Costner relies on the Western&rsquo;s power of mesmerization and imagery, attempting to combine a classic style of direction and tone with a modern thematic and narrative approach&#8230; for a far from stellar result!<\/p><p>One of the trademarks of the genre is, of course, the visuals, with wide-open spaces, and this is a characteristic feature of the Western, particularly highlighted here with its mountainous and desert landscapes taking us from Montana to Arizona. But a Western is also often a story of violence and action, and this aspect is also brought to life in a beautiful scene involving an Apache massacre and a suffocating underground trap. The film is therefore built around a kind of parallelism that opens and closes with a slaughter, thus forging links between the groups of characters: everyone loses loved ones, has to make choices about their route and their allies. Although the film begins from a very Fordian point of view, it gradually balances out, eventually filming the cowboys and Indians on an equal footing, with each opposing faction equally divided by an inner conflict. The problem therefore lies not in the point of view of the storyline, but rather in its development.<\/p><p>The word \u00ab\u00a0saga\u00a0\u00bb in the title (which is a bit over-long) refers to the scope of this four-film project, which is much more akin to a series than a cinema production. The first part, at three hours long, is limited only to an introduction: it&rsquo;s a very (and overly) long presentation of the characters, adding intrigues and protagonists before ending with no real conclusion, simply with a narrative fragment. This \u201cChapter 1\u201d opens up many avenues but doesn&rsquo;t really explore any of them, managing both to drag out the plot by switching from one group to another without connecting them, and also to rush its development with ellipses that don&rsquo;t delve any deeper into the characters or their relationships.<\/p><p>In fact, the main character, played by Costner himself, only appears after an hour and a half, to end up with just two sequences (one introductory and one on the run), with two scenes each interspersed with ellipses that not only make it hard to keep up, but also leave you completely uninvested in the journey of these very diverse individuals. Mirroring all this, the film closes with no less than a (once again, too long) trailer for its own sequel, with a montage highlighting the stakes that await this plethora of characters. So, as an introduction (admittedly too long, but nonetheless vast and intriguing), this \u201cChapter 1\u201d could be just fine, but this \u201cHorizon\u201d simply doesn&rsquo;t work as a film in its own right.<\/p><p>Quite simply, it&rsquo;s far from captivating, endlessly fragmenting and failing to develop its multiple groups of characters. It&rsquo;s a bit like watching a series of side quests in \u201cRed Dead Redemption\u201d. All in all, this is a major narrative failure, all the more so as the scenes are regularly too long, often due to drawn-out dialogues that don&rsquo;t help the acting, which turns out to be rather uneven throughout (not to mention \u2013 but this is a deliberate choice \u2013 that the short focal length doesn&rsquo;t really connect us with the characters).<\/p><p>Combining film and series formats, \u201cHorizon: Chapter 1\u201d is difficult to judge on its own merits, as it is not a finite entity. One thing&rsquo;s for sure: this is a wide-ranging, ambitious story, albeit too long and too slow, but one that surprisingly manages to make us eager to see the sequel, also thanks to its final montage (which, admittedly, has no business being there).
