Le r\u00e9alisateur et sc\u00e9nariste am\u00e9ricain originaire de l\u2019Arkansas, s\u2019attaque ici au portrait authentique d\u2019hommes et de femmes en marge de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 dans une impeccable reconstitution des ann\u00e9es 1960-70. Toutes ses histoires \u00e9tant profond\u00e9ment ancr\u00e9es dans la topographie d\u2019une Am\u00e9rique profonde, ce r\u00e9cit de <em>biker<\/em> n\u2019y \u00e9chappe pas, en se concentrant sur un club fictif du Midwest fortement inspir\u00e9 des Outlaws de Chicago.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0The Bikeriders\u00a0\u00bb est en effet l\u2019adaptation du roman-photo du journaliste Danny Lyon publi\u00e9 en 1968 sur ces ind\u00e9sirables de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 ayant retourn\u00e9 leur exclusion en une marginalit\u00e9 de fiert\u00e9. Dans le club tous trompent l\u2019ennui d\u2019une vie routini\u00e8re de cols bleus gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 leur hobby cylindr\u00e9. Ils y cr\u00e9ent leur propre monde, avec ses codes, ses r\u00e8gles, ses moments de partage, en somme une sous-culture proche du mythe et indissociable d\u2019une Am\u00e9rique fond\u00e9e sur la libert\u00e9 et la violence. Quand ils arrivent en ville \u2026 \u201ctout le monde change de trottoir\u201d\u00a0!<\/p><p>Construit autour d\u2019un trio de personnages principaux avec Johnny le fondateur du club, Benny son fils spirituel, et Kathy la femme de ce dernier, le sixi\u00e8me film de Jeff Nichols rappelle \u00ab\u00a0Les Affranchis\u00a0\u00bb de Scorsese dans sa structure narrative au r\u00e9cit racont\u00e9 au pass\u00e9 donnant lieu \u00e0 une forme de nostalgie et de prescience du drame \u00e0 venir. Ce sont en effet les interviews avec le personnage de Kathy, brillamment jou\u00e9 par l\u2019excellente Jodie Comer (Le Dernier Duel\u00a0; Free Guy) et son fort accent collant au ton pr\u00e8s de la vraie Kathy Bauer, qui structurent ce r\u00e9cit d\u2019ascension et d\u2019in\u00e9vitable d\u00e9clin, ce voyage transportant les personnages d\u2019un club soud\u00e9 vers un gang criminel.<\/p><p>C\u2019est l\u2019histoire d\u2019une innocence qui se perd, de l\u2019\u00e2ge d\u2019or de la moto, et de l\u2019h\u00e9ritage d\u2019une Am\u00e9rique qui r\u00eave de libert\u00e9. Une Am\u00e9rique fractur\u00e9e qui \u00e9volue au cours de la guerre du Vietnam entre les anciens coinc\u00e9s dans leur pass\u00e9 et les jeunes perdus, oblig\u00e9s d\u2019utiliser la violence comme moyen d\u2019expression. C\u2019est l\u2019histoire d\u2019un moment de bascule que les personnages traversent progressivement de sorte que cette bascule paraisse presque invisible dans un r\u00e9cit qui peu \u00e0 peu perd de son aura magique et change de ton.<\/p><p>La mise en sc\u00e8ne se fait ainsi de plus en plus sombre au fur et \u00e0 mesure que le contexte change \u00e0 l\u2019image d\u2019une magnifique sc\u00e8ne de nuit \u00e9clair\u00e9e \u00e0 la cigarette en clair-obscur entre un Johnny se la jouant Marlon Brando et un Benny ne semblant pas trouver sa place, toujours impr\u00e9visible et insondable \u2013 respectivement jou\u00e9s par les tr\u00e8s bons Tom Hardy et Austin Butler. Jeff Nichols sait avant tout \u00e9crire des personnages et les mettre en sc\u00e8ne, avec son chef op\u00e9rateur Adam Stone, entre circulation du d\u00e9sir, d\u00e9gaines et postures aguicheuses, et chevauch\u00e9es vrombissantes, m\u00ealant le couple et le collectif dans un r\u00e9cit commun. Ce n\u2019est pas le culte de la vitesse \u2013 les plans de motos ne la transmettent pas vraiment \u2013 mais bien celui de la libert\u00e9 \u2013 et ce sentiment-l\u00e0 en revanche est tr\u00e8s bien rendu.<\/p><p>Bien que l\u2019intrigue soit assez l\u00e9g\u00e8re et n\u2019apporte pas grand-chose de plus aux classiques du genre \u00e0 l\u2019image de \u00ab\u00a0L\u2019\u00e9quip\u00e9e sauvage\u00a0\u00bb de <em>L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Benedek<\/em> ou de \u00ab\u00a0Easy Rider\u00a0\u00bb de Dennis Hopper, \u00ab\u00a0The Bikeriders\u00a0\u00bb reste une un film \u00e0 la fois doux et violent qui t\u00e9moigne d\u2019une \u00e9poque de transition \u00e0 travers des personnages finement d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s dans un cadre \u00e9l\u00e9gant (bien qu\u2019assez sobre).<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Rapha\u00ebl Sallenave<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42480e6 elementor-widget__width-initial exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"42480e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><p>Although he was initially set to direct the prequel to \u201cA Quiet Place\u201d, which \u2013 ironically enough \u2013 is being released the same week as his new film, Jeff Nichols is once again shifting gears, after his wonderful coming-of-age story \u201cMud\u201d and his beautiful political drama \u201cLoving\u201d. Here, the Arkansas-born director and screenwriter tackles the authentic portrait of men and women on the edge of society, in a flawless recreation of the 1960s-70s. As all his stories are deeply rooted in the landscape of heartland America, this biker tale is no exception, focusing on a fictional Midwestern club heavily inspired by the Chicago Outlaws.<\/p><p>\u201cThe Bikeriders\u201d is indeed the adaptation of journalist Danny Lyon&rsquo;s 1968 photo-novel about these social outcasts who turned their alienation into a proud marginality. The club&rsquo;s members all escape the boredom of a routine blue-collar life with their motorcycle hobby. They create their own world, with its codes, its rules, its shared experiences \u2013 in short, a subculture close to myth, inextricably linked to an America founded on freedom and violence.<\/p><p>Centered around a trio of main characters with Johnny the club founder, Benny his spiritual son, and Kathy the latter&rsquo;s wife, Jeff Nichols&rsquo; sixth film is reminiscent of Scorsese&rsquo;s \u201cGoodfellas\u201d in its narrative structure, with the story told in the past tense providing a sense of nostalgia and foresight of the upcoming tragedy. Indeed, the interviews with the character of Kathy, brilliantly played by the excellent Jodie Comer (The Last Duel; Free Guy) and her strong accent, which closely matches the tone of the real Kathy Bauer, structure this tale of rise and inevitable fall, a journey that takes the characters from a tight-knit club to a criminal gang.<\/p><p>This is the story of a lost innocence, the golden age of motorcycling, and the legacy of an America that longs for freedom. A fractured America that changes during the Vietnam War, between the elders stuck in their past and a lost youth driven to violence as a means of expression. This is the story of a tipping point that the characters gradually cross, so that this tipping point seems almost invisible in a story that gradually loses its magical aura and switches tone.<\/p><p>The direction therefore becomes darker and darker as the context changes, as in a gorgeous, chiaroscuro, cigarette-lit night scene between a Marlon Brando-like Johnny and an always unpredictable, unfathomable Benny who can\u2019t quite seem to find his place \u2013 played respectively by the great Tom Hardy and Austin Butler. Above all, Jeff Nichols knows how to write characters and direct them, with his cinematographer Adam Stone, between flows of desire, teasing poses, and roaring rides, bringing together the couple and the group in a shared narrative. This is not a celebration of speed \u2013 the motorcycle shots don&rsquo;t really convey it \u2013 but rather of freedom \u2013 and this feeling, however, is very well captured.<\/p><p>Although the plot is rather thin and doesn&rsquo;t really add much to the classics of the genre such as <em>L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Benedek<\/em>&lsquo;s \u201cThe Wild One\u201d or Dennis Hopper&rsquo;s \u201cEasy Rider\u201d, \u201cThe Bikeriders\u201d remains a gentle yet violent film that bears witness to an era of change through well-developed characters in an elegant (albeit rather plain) production.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Rapha\u00ebl
