\u00ab\u00a0Jour 1\u00a0\u00bb nous ram\u00e8ne au commencement, au jour fatidique o\u00f9 ces cr\u00e9atures aveugles et dot\u00e9es d\u2019une ou\u00efe surd\u00e9velopp\u00e9e qui font la particularit\u00e9 de cet univers, s\u2019\u00e9cras\u00e8rent sur notre Terre. Nous avions d\u00e9j\u00e0 eu un aper\u00e7u de cette invasion dans le prologue de \u00ab\u00a0Sans un Bruit \u2013 Partie II\u00a0\u00bb avec un magnifique et terrifiant plan-s\u00e9quence ravageant cette petite ville de l\u2019Etat de New-York. Changement de d\u00e9cor cette fois-ci\u00a0: nous vivons l\u2019invasion en plein c\u0153ur de Manhattan\u00a0!<\/p><p>Mais on ne change pas que d\u2019environnement \u2013 passant de la campagne \u00e0 la ville \u2013 pour ce pr\u00e9quel, on change \u00e9galement de point de vue avec de nouveaux personnages ainsi que de style avec une nouvelle \u00e9quipe. Apr\u00e8s avoir cr\u00e9\u00e9 cet univers et r\u00e9alis\u00e9 les deux premiers, John Krasinski s\u2019occupera tr\u00e8s prochainement du troisi\u00e8me volet de la trilogie, mais a d\u2019abord laiss\u00e9 \u00e0 Jeff Nichols (qui sort \u00e9galement son nouveau film cette semaine, \u00ab\u00a0The Bikeriders\u00a0\u00bb) avant qu\u2019il ne soit remplac\u00e9 par Michael Sarnoski (Pig) le soin de d\u00e9velopper ce spin-off qui quitte les rivages de l\u2019\u00e9pouvante pour se rapprocher du film catastrophe.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0Jour 1\u00a0\u00bb se situe ainsi \u00e0 mi-chemin entre le film d\u2019horreur et le film apocalyptique avec de bien plus grands d\u00e9cors, beaucoup plus de figurants, et beaucoup plus de monstres pr\u00e9sents tout du long. Cela implique \u00e9videmment un budget plus cons\u00e9quent mais qui reste n\u00e9anmoins raisonnable pour un film de cette ampleur. A noter que s\u2019il y a \u00e9videmment quelques liens entre les films, il n\u2019y a aucunement besoin d\u2019avoir vu les deux pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents opus, pour appr\u00e9cier ce spin-off.<\/p><p>Ce d\u00e9passement du cadre des deux premiers apporte une nouvelle atmosph\u00e8re, ainsi que la pr\u00e9sence des monstres gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un excellent travail d\u2019effets sp\u00e9ciaux. Mais \u00ab\u00a0Jour 1\u00a0\u00bb b\u00e9n\u00e9ficie surtout de l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation de son duo d\u2019acteurs avec le tr\u00e8s convoit\u00e9 Joseph Quinn (prochainement \u00e0 l\u2019affiche de \u00ab\u00a0Gladiator 2\u00a0\u00bb et des \u00ab\u00a0Quatre Fantastiques\u00a0\u00bb) et de l\u2019excellente Lupita Nyong\u2019o (r\u00e9compens\u00e9e pour \u00ab\u00a0Twelve Years a Slave\u00a0\u00bb, sans oublier \u00ab\u00a0Us\u00a0\u00bb ou encore \u00ab\u00a0Black Panther\u00a0\u00bb).<\/p><p>Le prologue s\u2019attache \u00e0 pr\u00e9senter le personnage de cette derni\u00e8re, un personnage aux caract\u00e9ristiques bien sp\u00e9cifiques justifiant son comportement et ensuite ses choix et plus g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement la direction que va prendre l\u2019intrigue alors que le reste de la population new-yorkaise se retrouve confront\u00e9e \u00e0 ses propres interrogations de survie et son propre examen d\u2019une mort certaine. Avec son chat tr\u00e8s mimi (bien qu\u2019il faille une grande tol\u00e9rance de r\u00e9alisme quant \u00e0 son comportement face aux dangers alentours), elle croise la route d\u2019un \u00e9tudiant anglais pleutre. Et avec tr\u00e8s peu de dialogue, le film r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 transmettre beaucoup \u00e0 travers leurs regards, car ici la population ne s\u2019est pas encore acclimat\u00e9e \u00e0 une vie sans son, et doit s\u2019adapter pour survivre.<\/p><p>Bien qu\u2019il y ait quelques belles sc\u00e8nes enrichies par de belles interpr\u00e9tations, ce spin-off nous laisse quelque peu sur notre faim. D\u2019une part la mise en sc\u00e8ne aurait pu vraiment enrichir son cadre, surtout dans un univers o\u00f9 le moindre bruit peut sonner le glas de votre existence. Or, Manhattan n\u2019\u00e9tant pas exactement un synonyme urbain du silence, la r\u00e9alisation aurait pu jouer davantage sur cette atmosph\u00e8re anxiog\u00e8ne d\u2019immenses avenues d\u2019une m\u00e9galopole r\u00e9duites au silence. D\u2019autre part, le vrai point faible du film s\u2019av\u00e8re avant tout \u00eatre son sc\u00e9nario qui n\u2019apporte ni une nouvelle perspective ni une quelconque trame narrative captivante. We already caught a glimpse of this invasion in the prologue to \u201cA Quiet Place: Part II\u201d, with a breathtaking, terrifying uncut long shot wreaking havoc on a small town in New York State. This time, the setting is quite different: the invasion takes place right in the heart of Manhattan!<\/p><p>But this prequel doesn&rsquo;t just change the location \u2013 from the countryside to the city \u2013 it also changes the perspective, with new characters, and the style, with a new team. After creating this universe and directing the first two, John Krasinski will soon be working on the third part of the trilogy, but he first left it to Jeff Nichols (who is also releasing his new film this week, \u201cThe Bikeriders\u201d) before being replaced by Michael Sarnoski (Pig) to direct this spin-off, which moves away from the realm of horror towards the disaster movie.<\/p><p>\u201cDay One\u201d is thus halfway between a horror film and an apocalyptic movie, with much bigger sets, many more extras, and far more monsters on display at every turn. This obviously implies a bigger budget, although it remains quite reasonable for a film of this scale. While there are obviously a few connections between the films, there&rsquo;s absolutely no need to have seen the two previous installments to enjoy this spin-off.<\/p><p>This shift beyond the framework of the first two films adds a new vibe, as does the addition of monsters thanks to great special effects throughout. Yet \u201cDay One\u201d is above all driven by the performance of its acting duo, featuring the much-coveted Joseph Quinn (soon to star in \u201cGladiator 2\u201d and \u201cThe Fantastic Four\u201d) and the brilliant Lupita Nyong&rsquo;o (awarded for \u201cTwelve Years a Slave\u201d, not to mention \u201cUs\u201d and \u201cBlack Panther\u201d).<\/p><p>The prologue focuses on introducing the latter&rsquo;s character, a woman with very specific circumstances justifying her behavior and then her choices and, ultimately, the direction the plot will take as the rest of New York&rsquo;s population comes face to face with her own issues of survival and her own examination of a certain death. With her very cute cat (although you have to have a tremendous suspension of disbelief when it comes to its behavior in the face of surrounding perils), she comes across a cowardly English student. And with very little dialogue, the film succeeds in conveying a great deal through their eyes, as the people here have not yet settled into a life without sound, and must adapt to survive.<\/p><p>Although there are a few beautiful scenes fleshed out by great performances, this spin-off leaves us a bit disappointed. For one thing, the direction could have really added to the setting, especially in a world where the slightest noise can mean the end of your existence. As Manhattan isn&rsquo;t exactly an urban synonym for silence, the direction could have drawn more on the anxiety-inducing atmosphere of a megalopolis&rsquo; vast avenues reduced to silence. Secondly, the film&rsquo;s real weakness lies in its screenplay, which offers neither a fresh approach nor a compelling storyline of any kind. Finally, while the tension is there, the thrills are much less so, as the film relies more on the destructive and annihilating dimension of the alien species than on the chilling, sonic dimension of the first films.<\/p><p>While it doesn&rsquo;t break any new ground in the genre, this prequel should nonetheless appeal to fans of the end-of-the-world movies, and remains a fun entertainment &#8230;
