c\u00e9l\u00e9brissime film de William Friedkin, si le th\u00e8me de l\u2019exorcisme a beau \u00eatre devenu un poncif rab\u00e2ch\u00e9 et souvent ennuyeux, \u00ab\u00a0L\u2019Exorciste du Vatican\u00a0\u00bb semble apporter une certaine fra\u00eecheur en d\u00e9pla\u00e7ant l\u00e9g\u00e8rement le regard sur ce rituel qui fascine malgr\u00e9 tout. Nous voil\u00e0 donc en Castille, dans une abbaye d\u00e9labr\u00e9e o\u00f9 une famille meurtrie est victime de la possession d\u00e9moniaque de l\u2019un de ses membres. Directement envoy\u00e9 par le Vatican, le p\u00e8re Gabriele Amorth a alors pour mission de lib\u00e9rer le jeune Henry de Satan.<\/p><p>Oui, le long-m\u00e9trage de Julius Avery reprend le classique sch\u00e9ma des films d\u2019horreur \u00e0 soubassement religieux, avec un sc\u00e9nario vu et revu\u00a0: un environnement morbide, une famille traumatis\u00e9e, un pr\u00eatre local impuissant, une violence physique et blasph\u00e9matoire, et une confrontation finale entre le Bien et le Mal.<\/p><p>Mais, l\u2019intrigue a la particularit\u00e9 de se centrer sur son personnage-titre\u00a0: Gabriele Amorth, v\u00e9ritable exorciste en chef du dioc\u00e8se de Rome entre 1986 et 2016. Un homme qui, dans la vraie vie comme dans le film, est controvers\u00e9. Librement \u2013 et excellemment \u2013 interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par Russell Crowe, le p\u00e8re Amorth forme ainsi un protagoniste charismatique, \u00e0 la fois bienveillant, sage et dr\u00f4le, qui porte presque toute l\u2019histoire et lui donne un fond bien plus divertissant que l\u2019exorcisme qu\u2019il doit pratiquer.<\/p><p>Par le prisme d\u2019Amorth, le film prend alors une autre saveur \u00e0 mesure qu\u2019il confond christianisme, obscurantisme, voire \u00e9sot\u00e9risme (et m\u00eame, de fa\u00e7on int\u00e9ressante, maladie mentale), en particulier lors du climax \u2013 qui donne une justification plus que douteuse (voire subrepticement r\u00e9actionnaire) aux horreurs de l\u2019Inquisition mais pourrait lancer une jolie franchise autour du pr\u00eatre (une suite a \u00e9t\u00e9 annonc\u00e9e en avril dernier). Gabriele Amorth qui a d\u2019ailleurs inspir\u00e9 un documentaire de notre cher William Friedkin en 2017. Here we are in Castile, in a dilapidated abbey where a grieving family has fallen victim to the demonic possession of one of its members. Sent directly by the Vatican, Father Gabriele Amorth&rsquo;s mission is to free young Henry from Satan.<\/p><p>Yes, Julius Avery&rsquo;s feature film follows the classic pattern of religiously-based horror films, with a familiar storyline: a morbid environment, a traumatized family, a powerless local priest, physical and blasphemous violence, and an ultimate showdown between Good and Evil.<\/p><p>However, the plot is unique in that it focuses on its title character: Gabriele Amorth, the actual chief exorcist of the Roman diocese from 1986 to 2016. A man who, in real life as in the film, is highly controversial. Freely &#8211; and brilliantly &#8211; portrayed by Russell Crowe, Father Amorth makes a charismatic protagonist, at once benevolent, wise and funny, who carries most of the story and gives it a background far more entertaining than the exorcism he has to perform.<\/p><p>Through Amorth&rsquo;s prism, the film then takes on a different flavor as it blurs Christianity, obscurantism, even esotericism (and even, interestingly, mental illness), particularly during the climax \u2013 which gives a more than dubious (if not surreptitiously reactionary) justification to the horrors of the Inquisition but could launch a nice franchise around the priest (a sequel was announced last April). Gabriele Amorth, who inspired a documentary by the great William Friedkin in 2017. Last but not least, the film&rsquo;s multilingualism (relative and sometimes shaky, admittedly) should be highlighted, especially during the scenes in the Holy See, where Amorth definitely holds a place of his own.<\/p><p>Axel Chevalier<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>ITALIANO<\/strong><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Cinquanta anni dopo l\u2019uscita del celeberrimo film di William Friedkin, se il tema dell\u2019esorcismo \u00e8 diventato una banalit\u00e0 ripetitiva e spesso noiosa, \u201cL\u2019Esorcista del Papa\u201d sembra portare una certa freschezza con lo spostamento lieve dello sguardo su questo rito che affascina sempre. Eccoci quindi in Castilla, in un\u2019abbazia fatiscente dove una famiglia in lutto \u00e8 vittima dalla possessione demoniaca di uno dei propri membri. Direttamente mandato dal Vaticano, il padre Gabriele Amorth ha allora per missione di liberare il giovane Henry da Satana.<\/p><p>S\u00ec, il lungometraggio di Julius Avery riprende il classico schema dei film d\u2019orrore con connotazioni religiose, usando una sceneggiatura troppo familiare: un\u2019ambiente morbosa, una famiglia traumatizzata, un impotente prete locale, una violenza fisica e blasfematoria, ed una finale confrontazione fra il Bene ed il Male.<\/p><p>Ma, la trama ha la particolarit\u00e0 di focalizzarsi sul suo principale protagonista: Gabriele Amorth, ufficiale esorcista della diocesi di Roma dal 1986 al 2016. Un uomo che, tanto nella vita reale quanto nel film, rimane controverso. Liberamente \u2013 ed eccelsamente \u2013 interpretato da Russell Crowe, il padre Amorth incarna cos\u00ec un personaggio carismatico, benevolente, saggio e buffo, che porta quasi tutto l\u2019intreccio e gli d\u00e0 uno sfondo molto pi\u00f9 dilettevole dell\u2019esorcismo che esso deve praticare.<\/p><p>Attraverso il prisma di Amorth, il film assume poi un sapore diverso man mano che confonde cristianesimo, oscurantismo, perfino esoterismo (ed anzi, in un modo interessante, malattia mentale), specie durante il climax \u2013 che d\u00e0 una giustificazione davvero dubbiosa (persino furtivamente reazionaria) alle orrori dell\u2019Inquisizione ma potrebbe creare una nuova franchise sul prete (\u00e8 stato annunciato un sequel lo scorso aprile). Gabriele Amorth che ha d\u2019altronde ispirato un documentario del caro William Friedkin nel 2017. Infine, ci piacer\u00e0 il multilinguismo (relativo e a volte zoppicante, certo) del lungometraggio, soprattutto durante le scene nella Santa Sede, dove Amorth tiene definitivamente un posto a
