Il est aussi connu pour r\u00e9unir un casting absolument d\u00e9mentiel o\u00f9 m\u00eame des grands noms peuvent \u00eatre cantonn\u00e9s \u00e0 la figuration comme dans son pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent film \u00ab\u00a0The French Dispatch\u00a0\u00bb, hommage au cin\u00e9ma fran\u00e7ais. \u00ab\u00a0Asteroid City\u00a0\u00bb reprend ces diff\u00e9rents \u00e9l\u00e9ments avec un casting beaucoup trop long pour \u00eatre cit\u00e9 ici Wes Anderson poursuit donc son \u0153uvre et dans la mesure o\u00f9 ses films sont si particuliers, plut\u00f4t inclassables, voil\u00e0 pourquoi il est dit que Wes Anderson fait une fois de plus du Wes Anderson. D\u2019o\u00f9 ce commentaire r\u00e9current et paradoxal\u00a0: il se r\u00e9p\u00e8te et s\u2019enferme dans ses obsessions formalistes, c\u2019est un r\u00e9alisateur de forme plus que de fond. Il appara\u00eet alors intrigant de s\u2019attacher \u00e0 percer ce fond, celui d\u2019une \u0153uvre o\u00f9 l\u2019on ne voit pas tr\u00e8s bien o\u00f9 elle pourrait nous mener. Serait-ce une chronique post-confinement\u00a0? Un commentaire soci\u00e9tal\u00a0? Un pamphlet sur l\u2019incompr\u00e9hension mutuelle (potentiellement lui-m\u00eame incompris)\u00a0?<\/p><p>Le r\u00e9alisateur texan, francophile et parisien depuis plusieurs ann\u00e9es nous emm\u00e8ne cette fois-ci dans un d\u00e9sert fictif fait de maquettes de tr\u00e8s grandes tailles cr\u00e9\u00e9es par son fid\u00e8le chef d\u00e9corateur Adam Stockausen dans un champ de past\u00e8que pr\u00e8s de Madrid. Quelques bungalows \u00e9pars y c\u00f4toient une station-essence, un diner, d\u2019innombrables cactus et le clou du spectacle, un crat\u00e8re de m\u00e9t\u00e9orite, sous des couleurs pastel satur\u00e9es. Si le design et les couleurs d\u2019Asteroid City font si faux, c\u2019est que la ville elle-m\u00eame se veut fictive. C\u2019est en fait la sc\u00e8ne d\u2019une pi\u00e8ce de th\u00e9\u00e2tre dans laquelle nous sommes projet\u00e9s par une \u00e9mission de t\u00e9l\u00e9vision.<\/p><p>Le film s\u2019ouvre ainsi sur un dramaturge entamant l\u2019\u00e9criture de sa nouvelle pi\u00e8ce avec un narrateur et pr\u00e9sentateur TV donnant vie au r\u00e9cit qui s\u2019incarne ensuite \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran. C\u2019est donc un double r\u00e9cit\u00a0: celui d\u2019une petite ville perdue dans un d\u00e9sert am\u00e9ricain en 1955 o\u00f9 plusieurs personnages \u00e9clectiques se croisent \u00e0 l\u2019occasion d\u2019une convention de jeunes cadets de l\u2019espace et abordent les grandes questions de leur vie au gr\u00e9 des tests atomiques effectu\u00e9s au loin\u00a0; et un th\u00e9\u00e2tre new-yorkais o\u00f9 se joue sur sc\u00e8ne cette m\u00eame histoire au gr\u00e9 du manque d\u2019inspiration de son dramaturge. \u00ab\u00a0Asteroid City\u00a0\u00bb est ainsi \u00e0 la fois la ville au c\u0153ur du r\u00e9cit, le titre de la pi\u00e8ce de th\u00e9\u00e2tre en question, et celui du film que l\u2019on regarde nous-m\u00eames. C\u2019est donc une mise en abyme brouillant la fronti\u00e8re entre r\u00e9alit\u00e9 et fiction d\u00e9partag\u00e9e par ses changements de formats et de colorim\u00e9trie\u00a0: la pi\u00e8ce de th\u00e9\u00e2tre est retranscrite en format acad\u00e9mique (1\u00a0:37) en noir et blanc tandis que le r\u00e9cit lui-m\u00eame, cette intrigue d\u00e9sertique, est quant \u00e0 elle film\u00e9e en couleurs en CinemaScope (2\u00a0:39).<\/p><p>Comme toujours chez Wes Anderson, la direction artistique est perfectionniste avec des plans tr\u00e8s riches. Il fait preuve d\u2019une impressionnante pr\u00e9cision technique dans la composition de la perspective forc\u00e9e des paysages, des split-screen sym\u00e9triques s\u2019opposant aux champ-contre-champs asym\u00e9triques, ou encore des arri\u00e8re-plans d\u00e9notant avec le dialogue film\u00e9 en premier plan. Son r\u00e9cit reprend le m\u00eame humour d\u00e9cal\u00e9 plein de r\u00e9f\u00e9rences auquel il nous a habitu\u00e9s. Une splendeur visuelle et un monde parfaitement agenc\u00e9, voire trop bien au point de le rendre fictif, mais qui provoquent moins d\u2019\u00e9motions cette fois.<\/p><p>Alors o\u00f9 ce r\u00e9cit (et par extension, cette critique) nous emm\u00e8ne-t-il\u00a0? Tout comme dans \u00ab\u00a0The French Dispatch\u00a0\u00bb, Wes Anderson ouvre et ferme son film par une mise en abyme (une r\u00e9daction de journal puis une pi\u00e8ce de th\u00e9\u00e2tre) avec une histoire de deuil structurant le r\u00e9cit. Celle-ci peut mettre en lumi\u00e8re nos pertes de rep\u00e8res, comme il le fait d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but du film avec l\u2019absence de son lors des logos de studios. En brouillant ainsi nos rep\u00e8res, il ne peut y avoir une unique cl\u00e9 de lecture. \u00ab\u00a0Asteroid City\u00a0\u00bb peut ainsi s\u2019apparenter \u00e0 un questionnement m\u00e9taphysique sur le sens des choses et de nos vies, \u00e0 un fantasme de confinement avec les sc\u00e8nes de s\u00e9duction pudique entre bungalows interpos\u00e9s, ou encore \u00e0 une d\u00e9monstration du pouvoir de l\u2019artificialit\u00e9.<\/p><p>Il ne fait plus un film humaniste sur des personnages s\u2019exprimant \u00e0 travers des \u0153uvres artificielles, il cr\u00e9e cette fois l\u2019\u0153uvre artificielle elle-m\u00eame et nous laisse la d\u00e9construire et y trouver des \u00e9l\u00e9ments humanistes. Le pastiche est en effet si explicite, avec des terrains \u00e0 vendre qui ne sont pas de vrais terrains dans un r\u00e9cit qui n&rsquo;existe pas vraiment, que la ville devient essentiellement un d\u00e9cor d\u2019essai atomique o\u00f9 Anderson y teste ses armes. La supercherie est alors le propos m\u00eame du film, c&rsquo;est une \u0153uvre de renversement. Les formats et les couleurs sont invers\u00e9s, le 1\u00a0:37 (propre aux \u00e9missions TV des ann\u00e9es 1950) n\u2019encadre non pas la production que l\u2019on d\u00e9couvre dans le d\u00e9sert mais plut\u00f4t les coulisses de la pi\u00e8ce de th\u00e9\u00e2tre, et le 2\u00a0:39 n\u2019encadre quant \u00e0 lui pas la \u2018r\u00e9alit\u00e9\u2019 th\u00e9\u00e2trale plus vive que l\u2019histoire errante des protagonistes, mais reste sur ce cadre totalement irr\u00e9el. De m\u00eame le r\u00e9cit avance constamment \u00e0 contretemps avec un premier enjeu de deuil en tupperware r\u00e9solu d\u00e8s l\u2019incipit, un conflit familial qui dispara\u00eet \u00e0 l\u2019arriv\u00e9e des personnages, un alien dont la visite n\u2019a aucune cons\u00e9quence plan\u00e9taire, un secret d\u2019Etat qui s\u2019estompe comme un mauvais scandale, ou encore un ch\u00e8que gagn\u00e9 pour le meilleur projet scientifique qui ne servira finalement absolument pas son but.<\/p><p>Quoi qu\u2019il en soit, une chose est s\u00fbre\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Asteroid City\u00a0\u00bb est une \u0153uvre nous poussant \u00e0 r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir aussi bien sur sa forme que son fond, un film qui nous aura interrog\u00e9s bien apr\u00e8s son g\u00e9n\u00e9rique de fin volontairement interminable \u2026<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Rapha\u00ebl Sallenave<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42480e6 elementor-widget__width-initial exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"42480e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><p>Wes Anderson is probably one of the contemporary directors whose visual style is most distinctive, with its symmetrical shots, elaborate sets and vivid color palettes, of which \u201cThe Grand Budapest Hotel\u201d, \u201cMoonrise Kingdom\u201d and \u201cThe Royal Tenebaums\u201d are prime examples. He is also known for putting together an absolutely insane cast, where even big names can be reduced to extras, as in his previous film \u201cThe French Dispatch\u201d, a tribute to French cinema. \u201cAsteroid City\u201d takes up all these elements, with a cast far too long to be listed here. Wes Anderson thus pursues his work, and insofar as his films are so particular, rather unclassifiable, that&rsquo;s why it&rsquo;s said that Wes Anderson is once again doing a Wes Anderson movie. Hence this recurring and paradoxical criticism: he&rsquo;s repeating himself and confining himself to his formalist obsessions; he&rsquo;s more a director of style than substance. It&rsquo;s intriguing, then, to try to get to the bottom of a work where it&rsquo;s hard to see where it might lead. Could it be a post-lockdown chronicle? A societal statement? A plea on mutual misunderstanding (potentially itself misunderstood)?<\/p><p>The Texan director, a Francophile who has been living in Paris for several years, takes us this time to a fictitious desert made up of very large-scale miniatures created by his long-time production designer Adam Stockausen in a watermelon field near Madrid. A few scattered bungalows hang alongside a gas station, a diner, countless cacti and the highlight of the show, a meteorite crater, under saturated pastel colors. If Asteroid City&rsquo;s design and colors look so fake, it&rsquo;s because the city itself is intended to be fictional. It is, in fact, the stage of a play into which we are projected by a television program.<\/p><p>The film opens with a playwright starting to write his new play, with a narrator and TV presenter bringing the story to life, which is then brought to life on screen. It&rsquo;s a double story: that of a small town lost in an American desert in 1955, where several eclectic characters meet at a convention of young space cadets and discuss the big questions of their lives while atomic tests are being conducted in the distance; and a New York theater where the same story is played out on stage to suit the playwright&rsquo;s lack of inspiration. \u201cAsteroid City\u201d is therefore both the city at the heart of the story, the title of the play itself, and that of the film we ourselves are watching. It&rsquo;s a <em>mise en abyme<\/em> that blurs the line between reality and fiction, and is delineated by changes in aspect ratio and colorimetry: the play is filmed in Academy ratio (1:37) in black and white, while the story itself, the desertic plot, is filmed in color CinemaScope (2:39).<\/p><p>As always with Wes Anderson, the art direction is perfectionist, with richly layered shots. He demonstrates impressive technical precision in the composition of forced perspective landscapes, symmetrical split-screens in contrast to asymmetrical shot\/reverse shots, and backgrounds that contrast with the dialogue filmed in the foreground. The story is told with the same quirky, referential humor he&rsquo;s become known for. A visual wonder and a world that&rsquo;s perfectly crafted, even too well-crafted to the point of fictitiousness, though less emotionally engaging this time around.<\/p><p>So where does this story (and by extension, this review) take us? As in \u201cThe French Dispatch\u201d, Wes Anderson opens and closes his film with a <em>mise en abyme<\/em> (a newspaper editorial and then a theater play), with a story of grief structuring the narrative. This can highlight our loss of bearings, as he already illustrates at the start of the film with the absence of sound during the studio logos. By blurring our bearings in this way, there can be no single key to interpreting the film. \u201cAsteroid City\u201d can thus be seen as a metaphysical questioning of the meaning of things and of our lives, as a fantasy of lockdown with the scenes of bashful seduction across bungalows, or as a display of the power of artificiality.<\/p><p>He is no longer making a humanistic film about characters expressing themselves through artificial works, this time he creates the artificial work itself, leaving us to deconstruct it and find humanistic elements within it. Indeed, the pastiche is so explicit, with lots for sale that aren&rsquo;t real lots in a story that doesn&rsquo;t really exist, that the town essentially becomes a nuke town where Anderson tests his own guns. Deceit, then, is the very purpose of the film, a work of reversal. The aspect ratios and colors are reversed, with the 1:37 (typical of 1950s TV programs) not framing the production we see in the desert, but rather the backstage action of the play, and the 2:39 not framing the theatrical &lsquo;reality&rsquo; more alive than the wandering story of the protagonists, but remaining on this totally unreal setting. Likewise, the story constantly works off-beat, with an initial \u2018Tupperware\u2019 mourning issue solved in the very beginning, a family feud that disappears as soon as the characters arrive, an alien whose visit has no planetary repercussions, a state secret that fades away like a cheap scandal, or a winning check for the best scientific project that ultimately doesn&rsquo;t serve its purpose at all.<\/p><p>Be that as it may, one thing is sure: \u201cAsteroid City\u201d is a thought-provoking work in both style and substance, a film that will have us wondering long after its
