miroir \u2013 o\u00f9 l\u2019actrice Hend Sabri exprime son angoisse de rencontrer Olfa et ses filles \u2013 car le film en lui-m\u00eame est un jeu de miroir. Premier s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9 pour la comp\u00e9tition 2023 du Festival de Cannes, le nouveau film de Kaouther Ben Hania (La Belle et la Meute\u00a0; l\u2019Homme qui a vendu sa peau) est un pur objet hybride entrem\u00ealant fiction et documentaire en revenant sur une histoire tr\u00e8s m\u00e9diatis\u00e9e en Tunisie. \u00ab\u00a0Les filles d\u2019Olfa\u00a0\u00bb nous plonge \u00e0 une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 \u2018l\u2019ancien monde se meurt et le nouveau monde tarde \u00e0 appara\u00eetre\u2019, une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 la Tunisie oscille et vacille, un monde de clair-obscur o\u00f9 une m\u00e8re de quatre filles en perd deux d\u00e9vor\u00e9es par les loups (les monstres de la citation d\u2019Antonio Gramsci).<\/p><p>\u0152il d\u2019Or du meilleur documentaire \u00e0 Cannes, ce film exp\u00e9rimental est une affaire de souvenirs et le fruit de cinq ans de pr\u00e9paration. Pour convoquer le pass\u00e9 et le questionner, la cin\u00e9aste tunisienne invente tout simplement une forme\u00a0: ramener des com\u00e9diens pour jouer les souvenirs sous la direction des vrais personnages. Les deux cadettes jouent ainsi leur propre r\u00f4le face \u00e0 deux actrices professionnelles et Olfa, la m\u00e8re, joue \u00e0 la fois son propre r\u00f4le \u2013 ainsi que celui de sa s\u0153ur par moments \u2013 raconte ses souvenirs et est \u00e9galement doubl\u00e9e pour les sc\u00e8nes \u00e9motionnellement trop difficiles. Ce proc\u00e9d\u00e9 atypique est expliqu\u00e9 par la r\u00e9alisatrice d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but du film avant qu\u2019elle ne laisse ce huis-clos th\u00e9\u00e2tral devenir sa propre histoire. Tout en bienveillance, elle guide \u00e0 peine les \u00e9changes et met en place un dispositif o\u00f9, toutes ensemble, elles jouent non seulement la sc\u00e8ne, mais y r\u00e9fl\u00e9chissent aussi, ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 la nature du souvenir et \u00e0 sa signification. L\u2019\u00e9motion parfois jou\u00e9e et parfois capt\u00e9e afflue dans ces sc\u00e8nes o\u00f9 les filles assistent \u00e0 leurs souvenirs jou\u00e9s sous leurs yeux et y r\u00e9agissent parfois en pleurant, parfois en rigolant de l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation des actrices, voire y r\u00e9agissent diff\u00e9remment chacune. Le film m\u00e9lange ainsi des sc\u00e8nes dures et des sc\u00e8nes plus l\u00e9g\u00e8res voire comiques o\u00f9 la relation entre les deux groupes (famille\/actrices) se noue peu \u00e0 peu jusqu\u2019\u00e0 former une image inoubliable\u00a0: celle de quatre s\u0153urs parmi lesquelles on ne discerne plus le jeu du t\u00e9moignage.<\/p><p>Avec ce dispositif, les filles et la m\u00e8re se red\u00e9couvrent et sortent de leur personnage et du souvenir confrontant leurs opinions alors que la cam\u00e9ra tourne encore faisant basculer le film dans le pr\u00e9sent. Les sc\u00e8nes s\u2019enrichissent ainsi \u00e0 mesure que le r\u00e9cit se d\u00e9veloppe. C\u2019est alors \u00e0 la fois l\u2019histoire racont\u00e9e par la famille et les actrices mais aussi celle de leur rencontre. Hend Sabri ne cesse de pousser Olfa dans ses retranchements et en fin de compte se d\u00e9voile \u00e9galement. Les actrices sortent donc aussi de leur personnage et confrontent la famille car pour jouer leurs souvenirs, elles doivent les comprendre. C\u2019est en cela, aussi, un film sur le m\u00e9tier d\u2019acteur, sur la compr\u00e9hension de l\u2019autre, et une \u0153uvre en racontant une en train de se cr\u00e9er.<\/p><p>Si \u00ab\u00a0Les filles d\u2019Olfa\u00a0\u00bb est donc, avant tout, le portrait d\u2019une famille, le film aborde plusieurs th\u00e8mes \u00e0 travers l\u2019histoire de ces s\u0153urs\u00a0: l\u2019adolescence, la maternit\u00e9, la transmission g\u00e9n\u00e9rationnelle \u2013 et en particulier m\u00e8re-fille \u2013 ou encore les traumatismes. C\u2019est le portrait d\u2019une m\u00e8re c\u00e9libataire pleine de contradictions entre tendresse et fermet\u00e9. Mais si le film raconte l\u2019histoire d\u2019une famille, il raconte aussi celle d\u2019un pays, et une histoire des femmes avec la pr\u00e9sence des hommes en creux de chaque situation travers\u00e9e par les s\u0153urs. La nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration refuse ainsi toute autorit\u00e9 maternelle patriarcale (ce que repr\u00e9sente Olfa) mais n\u2019a pas les outils propres \u00e0 cette transition. C\u2019est alors \u00e0 travers ce refus du pouvoir et de la dictature, que la radicalisation peut lui servir d\u2019inversion des rapports de force. La r\u00e9volution tunisienne a ainsi r\u00e9volutionn\u00e9 aussi la famille d\u2019Olfa. Ghofrane, Rahma, Eya et Tayssir sont bien ses filles, mais elles sont aussi celles de la R\u00e9volution. Et pourront-elles \u00eatre la g\u00e9n\u00e9ration qui brisera le cycle de la violence\u00a0? C\u2019est une des questions que laisse planer cette \u0153uvre hybride et unique.<\/p><p>Passionnant et \u00e9mouvant, \u00ab\u00a0Les filles d\u2019Olfa\u00a0\u00bb nous offre un r\u00e9cit bouleversant auscultant deux g\u00e9n\u00e9rations de femmes tunisiennes, leurs silences et non-dits, et les effets de la R\u00e9volution. C\u2019est une \u0153uvre singuli\u00e8re incroyablement construite et renforc\u00e9e par ses cadrages travaill\u00e9s et son casting investi. Par sa capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 interroger et interpr\u00e9ter le monde pour nous le faire voir autrement, elle t\u00e9moigne de plus du pouvoir du cin\u00e9ma, et de son utilit\u00e9. First shortlisted for the Cannes Film Festival&rsquo;s 2023 competition, Kaouther Ben Hania&rsquo;s (Beauty and the Dogs; The Man of sold his skin) new movie is a pure hybrid artifact blending fiction and documentary as it revisits a much-publicized story in Tunisia. \u201cFour Daughters\u201d takes us back to a time when \u00ab\u00a0the old world is dying and the new world struggles to be born\u00a0\u00bb, a time when Tunisia wavers and falters, a world of chiaroscuro where a mother of four daughters loses two of them to the wolves (the monsters in Antonio Gramsci&rsquo;s quote).<\/p><p>Winner of the \u0152il d&rsquo;Or for Best Documentary at Cannes, this experimental movie is a matter of memories and the result of five years of preparation. To summon the past and question it, the Tunisian filmmaker simply invents a form: bringing in actors to enact the memories under the direction of the real characters. The two youngest daughters play their own roles opposite two professional actresses, and Olfa, the mother, plays both her own role \u2013 and that of her sister at times \u2013 recounts her memories, and is also acted by an actress for emotionally too difficult scenes. This atypical process is explained by the director at the start of the film, before she lets this theatrical closed-door setting become its own story. Benevolently, she barely guides the exchanges and sets up a space where, together, they not only re-enact the scene, but also reflect on it, as well as on the nature of the memory and its meaning. This reinvented sisterhood leads to unbelievable confessions and releases a cathartic speech.<\/p><p>Through a fake fiction project, she thus allows a family to tell its story, to explain it to each other, and to understand its underlying dynamics. Emotion, sometimes played out and sometimes drawn out, overwhelms these scenes in which the girls witness their memories played out before their very eyes, reacting sometimes with tears, sometimes with laughter at the actresses&rsquo; performances, and sometimes even reacting differently to them. In this way, the film mixes harsh scenes with lighter, even funny ones, in which the relationship between the two groups (family\/actresses) gradually builds up to create an unforgettable image: that of four sisters among whom we can no longer distinguish the acting from the telling.<\/p><p>With this set-up, the daughters and mother get to rediscover each other and step out of character and memory, confronting their opinions as the camera continues to roll, shifting the film firmly into the present. Scenes become richer as the narrative unfolds. It&rsquo;s both the story told by the family and the actresses, and the story of their own coming together. Hend Sabri constantly pushes Olfa to her limits, and ultimately reveals herself as well. The actresses therefore also step out of character and confront the family, because to play out their memories, they need to understand them. It&rsquo;s a portrait of a single mother full of contradictions between tenderness and toughness. But if the film tells the story of a family, it also tells that of a country, and a story of women, with the presence of men in the background of every situation the sisters go through. The filmmaker has the brilliant idea of symbolizing this feminine struggle by having a single actor play all the male roles.<\/p><p>But if this is indeed a personal story, it is deeply tied to political history and tells the story of the evolution of a generation with its divergences and ambivalences between respect for traditions and openness to the world&rsquo;s vibrations. The new generation rejects patriarchal maternal authority (as represented by Olfa), but lacks the tools to make this transition. It is through this rejection of power and dictatorship that radicalization can act as a means of reversing the power relations. The Tunisian revolution thereby revolutionized Olfa&rsquo;s family too. Ghofrane, Rahma, Eya and Tayssir are indeed her daughters, but they are also the Revolution&rsquo;s own daughters. And can they be the generation to break the cycle of violence? This is one of the questions raised by this unique hybrid tale.<\/p><p>Exciting and moving, \u201cFour daughters\u201d is a deeply affecting tale of two generations of Tunisian women, their silences and unspoken words, and the effects of the Revolution. It&rsquo;s a singular piece of cinema, incredibly crafted and bolstered by its meticulous framing and dedicated cast.
