pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents films \u00ab\u00a0Mission impossible\u00a0\u00bb et celui de \u00ab\u00a0Top Gun Maverick\u00a0\u00bb l\u2019an dernier, ce nouvel opus \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s attendu et promettait des cascades toujours plus folles \u2026<\/p><p>Avec ses sc\u00e8nes d\u2019action, ses poursuites, et ses gadgets, le film remplit parfaitement le cahier des charges d\u2019une mission impossible tout en densifiant son intrigue avec une suite directe pr\u00e9vue pour 2024. Ce n\u2019est en effet qu\u2019une premi\u00e8re partie, l\u2019intrigue n\u2019est donc pas r\u00e9solue \u00e0 la fin, mais s\u2019impose comme une \u2018entit\u00e9\u2019 en d\u00e9veloppant ses arcs narratifs et en proposant une fin partielle ne nous laissant pas en plein suspense comme l\u2019ont fait deux autres r\u00e9centes premi\u00e8res parties de blockbuster am\u00e9ricain \u00ab\u00a0Across the Spider-Verse\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0Fast X\u00a0\u00bb. Fort de leur collaboration depuis seize ans, Tom Cruise et Christopher McQuarrie reprennent du service avec ce septi\u00e8me film r\u00e9unissant l\u2019\u00e9quipe d\u2019Ethan Hunt, de Rebecca Ferguson \u00e0 Simon Pegg en passant par Ving Rhames avec le retour depuis le pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent opus de Vanessa Kirby ainsi que celui de Henry Czerny depuis le premier volet sorti en 1996. \u00ab\u00a0Dead Reckoning\u00a0\u00bb introduit \u00e9galement de nouveaux personnages avec Essai Morales, Pom Klementieff et Hayley Atwell dont l\u2019alchimie avec Tom Cruise ajoute une note d\u2019humour. Mais pour la premi\u00e8re fois, le grand m\u00e9chant est cette fois un personnage totalement d\u00e9sincarn\u00e9\u00a0!<\/p><p>Sa sortie actuelle apr\u00e8s l\u2019interruption de la production durant la pand\u00e9mie donne au film un air assez pr\u00e9monitoire \u2013 non pas concernant la technologie elle-m\u00eame (qui n\u2019est pas vraiment une IA \u00e0 proprement parler) mais plut\u00f4t le degr\u00e9 d\u2019attention qu\u2019elle suscite \u2013 tant les risques de l\u2019intelligence artificielle sont aujourd\u2019hui d\u00e9battus et omnipr\u00e9sents dans le film. Les enjeux sont alors plus grands que jamais et la marge d\u2019erreur infime pour nos h\u00e9ros pouss\u00e9s \u00e0 bout par ce programme calculateur et manipulateur. Dou\u00e9 d\u2019une conscience, il est apatride, amoral, d\u00e9loyal et contr\u00f4le l\u2019information mettant en p\u00e9ril la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 telle qu\u2019on la conna\u00eet. Mais cette menace moderne repose sur une myst\u00e9rieuse cl\u00e9 y donnant acc\u00e8s qui sera alors convoit\u00e9e par les mercenaires et espions de ce monde.<\/p><p>Ce McGuffin tellement conventionnel qu\u2019aucun protagoniste ne sait vraiment ce qu\u2019ouvre cette fameuse cl\u00e9 \u2013 la r\u00e9ponse \u00e9tant laiss\u00e9e int\u00e9gralement au prochain film \u2013 les fait voyager en Italie de Rome \u00e0 Venise en passant par le Moyen-Orient et la Scandinavie. Dans une optique de r\u00e9alisme et d\u2019immersion totale du spectateur, Tom Cruise s\u2019engage alors dans une s\u00e9rie de cascades toutes plus folles les unes que les autres\u00a0: d\u2019une course poursuite dans les rues romaines dans une Fiat 500 sur-vitamin\u00e9e en conduisant \u00e0 une main et menott\u00e9 \u00e0 son d\u00e9sormais c\u00e9l\u00e8bre saut de rampe en moto et parachute au bord d\u2019une falaise norv\u00e9gienne\u00a0; sans oublier un tour en speed-riding, une chute de locomotive ou encore un combat au couteau sur un toit de train en mouvement dans le troisi\u00e8me acte faisant \u00e9cho au final du premier opus. Le spectacle de ses cascades est devenu la marque de fabrique de la saga et le principal objectif de chaque nouveau film continuant d\u2019\u00e9crire la l\u00e9gende de l\u2019acteur sexag\u00e9naire. La s\u00e9quence \u00e0 Rome fonctionne particuli\u00e8rement bien entre suspense, action et humour et s\u2019av\u00e8re efficacement contrebalanc\u00e9e par une belle sc\u00e8ne entre Ilsa et Ethan \u00e0 Venise. Le rythme est soutenu, les surprises bien masqu\u00e9es et la symbolique religieuse de \u00ab\u00a0Fallout\u00a0\u00bb perp\u00e9tu\u00e9e avec l\u2019antagoniste Gabriel, qui tel l\u2019archange se r\u00e9v\u00e8le n\u2019\u00eatre ni plus ni moins qu\u2019un messager c\u00e9leste, celui du nouveau Dieu de ce monde\u00a0: la technologie. Le film file d\u2019ailleurs tout du long la m\u00e9taphore de l\u2019IA avec le cin\u00e9ma. Le danger vient avec l\u2019IA du tout digital (d\u2019o\u00f9 le retour aux syst\u00e8mes analogiques jouant sur la nostalgie des films d\u2019espionnage) refl\u00e9tant les avanc\u00e9es du streaming et ses dangers pour l\u2019industrie cin\u00e9matographique dont Tom Cruise s\u2019est fait le porte-drapeau. Mais c\u2019est sans compter sur ce dernier rempart hollywoodien qui est encore et toujours l\u00e0 pour frapper un sacr\u00e9 coup au box-office et par extension neutraliser cette IA. C\u2019\u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 lui qui avait r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 ramener le gros du public en salles l\u2019an dernier avec \u00ab\u00a0Top Gun\u00a0: Maverick\u00a0\u00bb (o\u00f9 il interpr\u00e9tait un protagoniste en passe d\u2019\u00eatre d\u00e9pass\u00e9 par la nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration mais d\u00e9tenait toujours les cl\u00e9s du succ\u00e8s), il se bat cette-fois pour la survie de son syst\u00e8me, l\u2019ancien monde, celui des cascades r\u00e9elles, celui des spectateurs en salles.<\/p><p>Mais si le sc\u00e9nario est certes d\u2019actualit\u00e9 en abordant les risques de l\u2019IA, il reste n\u00e9anmoins assez creux o\u00f9 personne ne comprend vraiment ce qu\u2019est cette sorte de HAL2023, qui l\u2019a mis au point, ou quel est v\u00e9ritablement son but\u00a0; sans compter que les antagonistes sont peu m\u00e9morables et que l\u2019intrigue va \u00e0 l\u2019encontre du d\u00e9veloppement de personnage qu\u2019a pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment connu Ilsa. On ici est bien loin du pur chef d\u2019\u0153uvre qu\u2019\u00e9tait le cinqui\u00e8me opus \u00ab\u00a0Rogue Nation\u00a0\u00bb (\u00e9galement \u00e9crit et r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par Christopher McQuarrie), avec un prologue trop long nous emmenant des bas-fonds du d\u00e9troit de B\u00e9ring au d\u00e9sert \u00e9mirati, une sc\u00e8ne d\u2019action finale qui en fait trop \u00e0 la \u00ab\u00a0Uncharted\u00a0\u00bb, et une mise en sc\u00e8ne pas aid\u00e9e par ses nombreux plans pench\u00e9s en plong\u00e9e, ses cadrages tr\u00e8s serr\u00e9s \u00e0 r\u00e9p\u00e9tition, et une musique bien trop furtive. C\u2019est simple, m\u00eame le clou du spectacle \u00e0 savoir les cascades de Tom Cruise qui ont beau \u00eatre toujours plus dangereuses n\u2019\u00e9patent pas tant que \u00e7a. Indeed, it&rsquo;s only a first part, so the plot isn&rsquo;t solved by the end, but it stands on its own as an &lsquo;entity&rsquo; by developing its narrative arcs and delivering a partial ending that doesn&rsquo;t leave us on a big cliffhanger like two other recent American blockbuster first parts, \u201cAcross the Spider-Verse\u201d and \u201cFast X\u201d. Having worked together for sixteen years, Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie are back at it again in this seventh movie, reuniting the Ethan Hunt team, from Rebecca Ferguson to Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames, with the return of Vanessa Kirby from the previous installment and Henry Czerny from the first one, released in 1996. \u201cDead Reckoning\u201d also introduces new characters with Essai Morales, Pom Klementieff and Hayley Atwell, whose chemistry with Tom Cruise adds extra humor. But for the first time, the big bad is here a totally disembodied character!<\/p><p>Its release today, after production was shut down during the pandemic, makes the film seem rather prescient \u2013 not regarding the technology itself (which isn&rsquo;t really AI per se), but rather in the degree to which it&rsquo;s on people&rsquo;s mind \u2013 so much so that the risks of artificial intelligence are now widely debated and ever-present in the film. The stakes are higher than ever, and the margin for error infinitesimal for our heroes, pushed to the limit by this calculating, manipulative program. Gifted with a conscience, it is stateless, amoral, disloyal and controls information, jeopardizing the truth as we know it. But this modern threat hinges on a mysterious key that will be coveted by this world&rsquo;s mercenaries and spies.<\/p><p>This McGuffin, so conventional that none of the protagonists really knows what this famous key opens \u2013 the answer being left entirely for the next movie \u2013 takes them on a journey through Italy, from Rome to Venice, via the Middle East and Scandinavia. In the pursuit of realism and total immersion for the viewer, Tom Cruise then embarks on a series of stunts, each one wilder than the last: from a chase through the streets of Rome in a supercharged Fiat 500, driving one-handed and handcuffed, to his now-famous ramp jump on a motorcycle and skydiving off the edge of a Norwegian cliff; not to mention a speed-flying ride, a locomotive drop and a knife fight on a moving train roof in the third act, echoing the finale of the first movie. The spectacle of his stunts has become the saga&rsquo;s trademark, and the main focus of each new film as it continues to write the legend of the actor now in his sixties. While he may never receive an Oscar for Best Stunt, his recent physical and box-office feats have definitely helped propel the momentum needed for the Academy to put such an award on the agenda.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10623 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Snapshot_1251.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Snapshot_1251.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Snapshot_1251-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Snapshot_1251-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Snapshot_1251-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>\u201cDead Reckoning\u201d is therefore first and foremost a visual spectacle driven by a dedicated cast and an Ethan Hunt who has clearly taken some impressive French lessons since his last mission. The sequence in Rome works particularly well, combining suspense, action and humor, and is effectively balanced by a beautiful scene between Ilsa and Ethan in Venice. The pace is strong, the surprises well masked and the religious symbolism of \u201cFallout\u201d carried through with the antagonist Gabriel, who, like the archangel, turns out to be nothing more nor less than a celestial messenger, the messenger of this world&rsquo;s new God: technology. Throughout, the film draws on the metaphor of AI and cinema. The danger with AI comes from the all-digital world (hence the return to analog systems, drawing on the nostalgia of spy thrillers), reflecting the rise of streaming and its threat to the film industry, of which Tom Cruise championed the cause. But the last Hollywood line of defense is still there to strike a blow at the box office and, by extension, neutralize this AI. Having already succeeded in bringing the bulk of the public back to theaters last year with \u201cTop Gun: Maverick\u201d (where he played a protagonist on the verge of being replaced by the new generation, but still held the keys to success), this time he&rsquo;s fighting for the survival of his system, the old world, the world of real stunts, the world of theatrical audiences.<\/p><p>But while the script is certainly topical, dealing with the risks of AI, it remains rather weak, as nobody really understands what this kind of HAL2023 actually is, who developed it, or what its real purpose is; not to mention that the antagonists are hardly memorable, and the plot is at odds with Ilsa&rsquo;s previous character development. This is a far cry from the sheer masterpiece that was the fifth installment, \u201cRogue Nation\u201d (also written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie), with an overly long prologue that takes us from the shallows of the Bering Strait to the Emirati desert, a final action scene that goes too far \u00e0 la \u201cUncharted\u201d, and a direction that isn&rsquo;t helped by its many inclined low-angle shots, its repeatedly tight framing, and a score far too stealthy. Quite simply, even Tom Cruise&rsquo;s increasingly challenging stunts aren&rsquo;t that dazzling. There&rsquo;s clearly something wrong when the stunts are more impressive in the behind-the-scenes footage available on YouTube than they are in the heart of the action on the big screen!<\/p><p>Despite all this, \u201cDead Reckoning\u201d remains an intense, well-paced summer blockbuster that&rsquo;s rather entertaining but unfortunately quite
