l\u2019humain.<\/p><p>D\u00e9j\u00e0 multi-prim\u00e9 \u00e0 Cannes \u2013 apr\u00e8s une Palme d\u2019or pour \u00ab\u00a0Winter Sleep\u00a0\u00bb, deux Grands Prix pour \u00ab\u00a0Uzak\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0Il \u00e9tait une fois en Anatolie\u00a0\u00bb, et un Prix de la mise en sc\u00e8ne pour \u00ab\u00a0Les Trois Singes\u00a0\u00bb \u2013 le r\u00e9alisateur turc \u00e9tait cette ann\u00e9e de retour sur la croisette o\u00f9 son nouveau film remporta le Prix de l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation f\u00e9minine pour Merve Dizdar. D\u00e8s le premier plan, il annonce la couleur avec un \u00e9cran presque enti\u00e8rement blanc qui ouvre le film au c\u0153ur de l\u2019hiver d\u2019Anatolie orientale. L\u2019histoire suit deux professeurs d\u2019\u00e9cole, colocataires, tous deux c\u00e9libataires, l\u2019un attendant d\u00e9sesp\u00e9ramment une promotion et l\u2019autre son hypoth\u00e9tique mutation \u00e0 Istanbul. L\u2019opposition entre l\u2019urbain (d\u00e9sir\u00e9) et le rural (endur\u00e9) est donc toujours pr\u00e9sente m\u00eame si \u00ab\u00a0Les herbes s\u00e8ches\u00a0\u00bb se d\u00e9roule exclusivement dans cette r\u00e9gion recul\u00e9e du l\u2019est de la Turquie o\u00f9 aucun film n\u2019avait \u00e9t\u00e9 jusque-l\u00e0 tourn\u00e9. C\u2019est un lieu qui semble perdu, recouvert de neiges six mois par an, et qui d\u00e8s les premiers plans nous envahit d\u2019un fort sentiment de solitude. Dans ce rude environnement, le quotidien des protagonistes va \u00eatre bouscul\u00e9 par une lettre d\u2019amour et une rencontre remettant en question leurs certitudes et leurs comportements.<\/p><p>Pour son neuvi\u00e8me long-m\u00e9trage, Ceylan signe une fresque sensible difficile \u00e0 synth\u00e9tiser en quelques mots qui met en sc\u00e8ne des personnages riches que l\u2019on apprend \u00e0 conna\u00eetre au fil d\u2019une intrigue qui les confronte \u00e0 eux-m\u00eames. Nous changeons ainsi progressivement d\u2019avis \u00e0 mesure que nous percevons leurs forces et leurs f\u00ealures. Le personnage de Samet (Deniz Celilo\u011flu), belle figure de l\u2019enseignant, s\u2019\u00e9caille progressivement nous obligeant \u00e0 chercher \u00e0 le comprendre. Son respect \u00e9voluant en frustration pour Kenan (Musab Ekici), nourrira une rivalit\u00e9 primaire chez les deux amis que seule Nuray \u2013 figure id\u00e9aliste et romanesque du film \u2013 saura d\u00e9jouer, son caract\u00e8re \u00e0 la fois ardent et bris\u00e9 de militante politique contrastant avec l\u2019individualisme libertaire et \u00e0 la soumission sociale des hommes.<\/p><p>Les protagonistes de ce film turco-franco-germano-su\u00e9dois ressemblent aux individus de la vie de tous les jours, de sorte que nous pouvons nous interroger sur eux et douter d\u2019eux, ce que le cin\u00e9ma ne permet que tr\u00e8s rarement. Dans ce cin\u00e9ma du doute, aucun des personnages n\u2019est alors r\u00e9ellement capable d\u2019exprimer pleinement ses id\u00e9es ou ses sentiments au gr\u00e9 de magnifiques dialogues \u00e9loquents o\u00f9 il y a \u00e0 la fois ce qui y est dit et ce qui ne l\u2019est pas. Ces longues conversations bifurquent comme dans la vie nous emmenant d\u2019un sujet \u00e0 un autre avec fluidit\u00e9 et coh\u00e9rence au point de nous plonger dans leur vie de tous les jours.<\/p><p>Si le r\u00e9alisateur et co-sc\u00e9nariste (avec sa femme Ebru Ceylan et l\u2019\u00e9crivain Akin Aksu dont le journal a inspir\u00e9 une partie de l\u2019histoire) fait donc preuve d\u2019une \u00e9criture fine, il signe \u00e9galement une mise en sc\u00e8ne fluide et soign\u00e9e avec de tr\u00e8s longs plans fusionnant les paysages expressifs de l\u2019Anatolie, vastes \u00e9tendues de libert\u00e9, aux int\u00e9rieurs chauds sources de tension pour les personnages. Dans la salle des professeurs, il laisse ainsi entrer dans le plan, l\u2019un apr\u00e8s l\u2019autre plusieurs personnages, chacun se greffant au dialogue en cours, le tout dans une seule et unique prise\u00a0; puis utilise une s\u00e9rie de champs-contrechamps pour une \u00e9prouvante conversation entre Nuray et Samet confrontant leurs valeurs politiques et leurs contradictions\u00a0; s\u2019attarde \u00e0 filmer avec subtilit\u00e9 uniquement l\u2019effet sur les visages des messages \u00e9chang\u00e9s par t\u00e9l\u00e9phone\u00a0; et prend \u00e9galement le temps d\u2019exposer les rencontres pass\u00e9es du protagoniste \u00e0 travers des s\u00e9quences m\u00ealant plans fixes et photographies. From the very first shot, he sets the tone with an almost entirely white screen that opens the film in the depths of the Eastern Anatolian winter. The story follows two schoolteachers, roommates, both single, one desperately awaiting a promotion and the other his hypothetical transfer to Istanbul. The opposition between the urban (desired) and the rural (endured) is thus still prevalent, even though \u201cAbout Dry Grasses\u201d takes place exclusively in this remote region of eastern Turkey, where no other film had ever been shot before. It&rsquo;s a place that seems lost, covered in snow half the year round, and from the very first shots we&rsquo;re overwhelmed by a strong sense of loneliness. In this harsh environment, the protagonists&rsquo; daily lives are turned upside down by a love letter and an encounter that challenges their certainties and behaviors.<\/p><p>Ceylan&rsquo;s ninth feature is a sensitive epic that&rsquo;s hard to sum up in a few words, featuring rich characters we get to know as the plot brings them face to face with themselves. We gradually change our opinions as we come to understand their strengths and flaws. The character of Samet (Deniz Celilo\u011flu), a great teacher figure, gradually shatters, forcing us to try to understand him. His respect for Kenan (Musab Ekici) that evolves into frustration, fuels a natural rivalry between the two friends that only Nuray \u2013 the film&rsquo;s idealist and romantic figure \u2013 can overcome, with her fiery yet broken character of political activist contrasting with the libertarian individualism and social submissiveness of the men.<\/p><p>The protagonists of this Turkish-French-German-Swedish film resemble everyday people, so that we can wonder about them and doubt them, something that movies rarely allow. In this cinema of doubt, none of the characters is really able to fully express their ideas or feelings over the course of wonderful, eloquent dialogues, in which there is both what is said and what is not. These long conversations meander as they do in life, taking us from one subject to another with flow and coherence, to the point of immersing us in their everyday lives.<\/p><p>While the director and co-writer (with his wife Ebru Ceylan and writer Akin Aksu, whose diary inspired part of the story) demonstrates his sharp writing skills, he also creates a smooth, well-crafted <em>mise en sc\u00e8ne<\/em>, with long shots that blend the expressive landscapes of Anatolia, vast open spaces of freedom, with the warm interiors, sources of tension for the characters.
