Son manifeste publi\u00e9 trois ans plus t\u00f4t souligne la r\u00e9currence de la d\u00e9gradation des biens dans les diff\u00e9rents mouvements de justice sociale dans l\u2019Histoire et interroge la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de la destruction d\u2019infrastructures pour renoncer aux combustibles fossiles et pr\u00e9server la civilisation humaine dans la mesure o\u00f9 le changement climatique est devenu une menace existentielle pour nos soci\u00e9t\u00e9s. En reprenant le titre original de l\u2019ouvrage, Daniel Goldhaber confronte les id\u00e9es abstraites de l\u2019essai politique au langage cin\u00e9matographique d\u2019Hollywood dans un thriller nerveux et haletant.<\/p><p>Pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 au festival international de Toronto en 2022, \u00ab\u00a0Sabotage\u00a0\u00bb cr\u00e9e ainsi une intrigue autour du sujet dont il est inspir\u00e9 \u00e0 mi-chemin entre le western et le film de braquage. Signant ici son second long-m\u00e9trage (apr\u00e8s le film d\u2019horreur psychologique \u00ab\u00a0Cam\u00a0\u00bb), le r\u00e9alisateur am\u00e9ricain insuffle une urgence inqui\u00e9tante et maintient un suspense constant dans ce film d\u2019action \u00e0 port\u00e9e politique aux airs, comme il le dit lui-m\u00eame, d\u2019un \u201cOcean\u2019s 11 \u00e9coterroriste\u201d construit en flash-backs \u201cclairement inspir\u00e9s de Reservoir Dogs\u201d.<\/p><p>Son \u00e9quipe de braqueurs se compose elle de huit personnages h\u00e9t\u00e9roclites formidablement interpr\u00e9t\u00e9s par une troupe de jeunes com\u00e9diens dont certains ont particip\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9criture et \u00e0 la production du film. Daniel Goldhaber nous embarque au c\u0153ur de ce groupe d\u2019\u00e9co-activistes dans une mise en sc\u00e8ne ultrar\u00e9aliste renforc\u00e9e par la photographie agit\u00e9e de Tehillah De Castro (dont c\u2019est le premier film) sur une pellicule 16mm, et une atmosph\u00e8re tendue \u00e9voqu\u00e9e par la musique de Gavin Brivik. C\u2019est un thriller particuli\u00e8rement bien \u00e9crit et mont\u00e9 qui entretient un formidable suspense gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 sa narration non-lin\u00e9aire, son chapitrage, et ses retournements de situation jouant avec les nerfs du spectateur. Les activistes se distinguent en effet aussi bien par leurs origines g\u00e9ographiques qu\u2019ethniques ou sociales, et les raisons de leur passage \u00e0 l\u2019acte. Mais malgr\u00e9 leurs diff\u00e9rents profils, ils convergent tous vers cette lutte collective.<\/p><p>D\u00e9sob\u00e9ir pour ne pas p\u00e9rir \u2026 Par sa dimension subversive, le sc\u00e9nario interroge le spectateur dans la mesure o\u00f9 il ne cherche pas \u00e0 le convaincre ou \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9mouvoir, l\u2019enjeu \u00e9tant de montrer qu\u2019il n\u2019y a plus le temps pour le dialogue et que l\u2019heure est \u00e0 l\u2019action. Il ne revient donc absolument ni sur les exc\u00e8s du capitalisme et la destruction g\u00e9n\u00e9ralis\u00e9e de la plan\u00e8te ni sur le minutieux et complexe plan \u00e9tabli par les personnages, mais explore plut\u00f4t la complexit\u00e9 morale de l\u2019acte qu\u2019il qualifie lui-m\u00eame de \u2018terroriste\u2019 bien que ses protagonistes mettent un point d\u2019honneur \u00e0 ne d\u00e9truire que des infrastructures.<\/p><p>Mais \u00ab Sabotage \u00bb s\u2019impose plus comme un film sur l\u2019acte lui-m\u00eame que sur l\u2019impact puisqu\u2019il n\u2019impose pas son intrigue et la radicalit\u00e9 de ses personnages comme solution unique. Il montre simplement une voie o\u00f9 celles-ci pourraient l\u2019\u00eatre mais laisse le spectateur libre d\u2019imaginer les cons\u00e9quences de ces actes (contrairement au film \u00ab Night Moves \u00bb de Kelly Reichardt sorti il y a pr\u00e8s de dix ans).<\/p><p>Film ind\u00e9pendant encore en salles en France et d\u00e9j\u00e0 disponible sur <em>Netflix<\/em> (USA &amp; UK), \u00ab\u00a0Sabotage\u00a0\u00bb est une \u0153uvre os\u00e9e qui r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 \u00e9quilibrer les enjeux politiques et th\u00e9oriques avec une narration captivante et \u00e9mouvante. Someone has to pull the emergency brake. If governments don&rsquo;t, the rest of us will\u00a0\u00bb, declared Swedish academic Andreas Malm last June. His manifesto, published three years earlier, highlights the recurrence of property destruction in every social justice movement in history, and questions whether or not it is necessary to move away from fossil fuels and preserve human civilization, given that climate change has become an existential threat to our societies. Using the book&rsquo;s original title, Daniel Goldhaber adapts the abstract ideas of the political essay with the cinematic language of Hollywood in a nervy, breathless thriller.<\/p><p>Presented at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022, \u201cHow to blow up a pipeline\u201d builds a plot around this subject, halfway between a Western and a heist film. In his second feature film (after the psychological horror movie \u00ab\u00a0Cam\u00a0\u00bb), the American director infuses a worrying sense of urgency and constant suspense into this politically-charged action film, which, as he describes it himself, feels like an \u00ab\u00a0ecoterrorist Ocean&rsquo;s 11\u00a0\u00bb built around flashbacks \u00ab\u00a0clearly inspired by Reservoir Dogs\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p><p>His team of heists is made up of eight diverse characters, wonderfully portrayed by a cast of young actors, some of whom helped write and produce the film. Daniel Goldhaber takes us into the heart of this group of eco-activists in an ultra-realistic staging enhanced by Tehillah De Castro&rsquo;s (debut feature) restless cinematography on 16mm film, and a tense atmosphere conveyed by Gavin Brivik&rsquo;s music. It&rsquo;s a particularly well-written and edited thriller that builds tremendous suspense thanks to its non-linear narration, chaptering and plot twists that test the viewer&rsquo;s nerves. The activists differ in their geographical, ethnic and social origins, and in their motivations to act. But despite their different profiles, they all converge in this collective struggle.<\/p><p>Disobeying to avoid dying&#8230; With its subversive dimension, the screenplay questions the viewer insofar as it does not seek to convince or move them, the challenge being to show that there is no more time for dialogue and that the time for action has come.
