En quelques mots :
Un professeur (noir) de littérature se fait renvoyer après avoir choqué une étudiante (blanche) pour avoir écrit le mot ‘nègre’ au tableau ! Tel est le postulat de départ de cette satire douce et amère sur les déboires d’un écrivain noir face à l’hypocrisie du lectorat blanc. Pour son premier film, le scénariste (après avoir écrit quelques épisodes de séries TV) et réalisateur Cord Jefferson réussit son mélange entre un fond intéressant (sur la pauvreté recherchée par le marché littéraire mais aussi l’identité noire et sa perception aujourd’hui), un ton léger, et des dialogues comiques bien servis par son casting avec en tête Jeffrey Wright qui obtient enfin un rôle de premier plan ! Son film est aussi une étude de l’ego et des dynamiques dysfonctionnelles au sein d’une famille. Mais si la satire sonne juste et fait souvent sourire, l’ensemble reste néanmoins assez plat et aurait pu aller plus loin. Nommé cinq fois aux Oscars, dans les catégories principales, le film repart avec la statuette de meilleur scénario adapté tout comme aux BAFTA, après avoir également remporté le prix du public au festival de Toronto où il avait été présenté !

A (black) professor of literature gets suspended after offending a (white) student for writing the word ‘nigger’ on the board! Such is the premise of this bitter-sweet satire about a black writer’s setbacks in the face of the hypocrisy of white audiences. For his first film, the screenwriter (after having written a few episodes of TV shows) and director Cord Jefferson succeeds in mixing an interesting story (on the poverty targeted by the literary market, but also on black identity and its perception today), a light tone, and funny dialogues well delivered by his cast, led by Jeffrey Wright, who finally gets a leading role! His film is also a study of ego and dysfunctional dynamics within a family. But while the satire rings true and often makes you smile; the whole thing remains fairly flat and could have gone even further. Nominated five times for the Academy Awards, in the major categories, the film won the Best Adapted Screenplay statuette, as it did at the BAFTAs, after also winning the Audience Award at the Toronto festival where it premiered!
