En quelques mots :
Deuxième film consacré au personnage de Captain Marvel, ce nouveau volet du MCU réunit Monica Rambeau et Kamala Khan aux côtés d’un Nick Fury très différent du chef espion que l’on a pu voir dans la série qui lui a été consacrée cet été. Le film poursuit les aventures de ces deux héroïnes découvertes dans les séries « WandaVision » et « Ms. Marvel » sans toutefois qu’il soit nécessaire de les avoir vues pour suivre l’intrigue qui met en scène le retour de l’Empire Kree et menace les galaxies avoisinantes. Ni DaCosta (Candyman) signe un film avant tout très fun qui se distingue par sa légèreté, par sa brève durée (le plus court du MCU) et son trio qui fonctionne bien grâce au concept d’échange de leurs pouvoirs et à l’alchimie entre Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris et l’attachante Iman Vellani. Certes « The Marvels » n’est pas le rendez-vous cinématographique de l’année et souffre un peu d’une intrigue conventionnelle et de variations de tons mais il a le mérite de ne pas se prendre trop au sérieux et de proposer quelques séquences inattendues. C’est un film comique et plaisant qui reste néanmoins assez anecdotique au sein de la franchise bien qu’il ouvre la porte à une nouvelle ère de l’univers.

This second film devoted to Captain Marvel brings together Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan alongside a very different Nick Fury than the spy master seen in the series focusing on him this summer. The movie carries on the adventures of these two heroines discovered in the “WandaVision” and “Ms. Marvel” shows, although it’s not necessary to have seen them to keep up with the plot, which focuses on the return of the Kree Empire and the threat it poses to neighboring galaxies. Ni DaCosta (Candyman) delivers a primarily fun movie that stands out for its levity, its brief runtime (the shortest in the MCU) and its trio, which works well thanks to the swapping of powers idea and the chemistry between Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and the lovely Iman Vellani. Admittedly, “The Marvels” isn’t the motion picture of the year, and suffers a little from a conventional plot and tonal shifts, but it succeeds in not taking itself too seriously and in offering a few unexpected sequences. It’s a pleasant, funny film that nevertheless remains rather anecdotal within the franchise, even though it opens the door to a new era in this universe.
