Persuasion

As a new adaptation of Jane Austen’s work, this 2022 version of “Persuasion” released on Netflix retains the context of the period film but disrupts social codes and introduces anachronistic dialogue with modern-day expressions and behaviors while maintaining a period setting and a certain restraint and class befitting the bourgeoisie of the time.

Living with her snobby family on the verge of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is a non-conformist woman with modern sensibilities. When the dashing captain she once let go comes back into her life, Anne must choose between leaving the past behind or listening to her heart and seizing a second chance.

Rather than an adaptation, this is truly a rewrite of Jane Austen’s last novel (published posthumously) with a homodiegetic narrator who repeatedly breaks the fourth wall thus bringing more introspection by exposing much more of the character’s doubts. But in general, everything is much more explicit in this “Persuasion”, each character explaining what he perceives or feels, whereas the heart of the original story lived in the unspoken.

Carrie Cracknell’s direction is more modern than the style to which the story refers and features rather caricatured characters (in particular the narcissistic father played by Richard E. Grant). This production with its garish colors is rather poor, certainly lacking a sense of grandeur in the reconstruction of the period despite the suitable costumes and environment. Dakota Johnson once again shows a remarkable diversity of acting with this classic role. Overall, with Cosmo Jarvis and Henry Golding in particular, the cast is also convincing in this modern and somewhat « woke » direction taken by this Netflix 2022 version which is reminiscent of the tone and style of “Bridgerton” as well as the interruptions and criticisms of a series like “Fleabag”.

In itself, it is therefore an interesting and rather successful modernization to watch. But as an adaptation of the original work, it is lighter and remains quite mediocre, very different from the Sally Hawkins movie. Just don’t compare it with the BBC version.
