En quelques mots :
Si sur le papier « Smashing Machine » promettait quelques belles surprises (un film A24 où Dwayne Johnson alias The Rock a enfin un rôle sérieux, en compagnie d’une incontournable Emily Blunt, le tout dans un biopic sur une figure sportive pionnière méconnue dont le visuel porte un certain grain agréablement old school), la réalité est moins reluisante que les corps en sueur des combattants de ce qui deviendra le désormais célèbre MMA. Voilà donc l’histoire de Mark Kerr, lutteur de très haut niveau à l’ascension vertigineuse et internationale dans les années 1990, jusqu’à ce que son addiction aux opiacées le rattrape. Mais si la qualité de prestation de Dwayne Johnson est à souligner tant sur la partie sportive que sur la partie personnelle du récit, le scénario n’est qu’une énumération linéaire et sans réelle consistance des moments de vie de Mark Kerr, reléguant au second plan voire à des clichés tous les rôles et enjeux sous-jacents – de la relation amoureuse à la désintoxication en passant par la re-consécration mondiale du héros et la forte amitié qu’entretient Mark Kerr avec ses pairs. La réalisation de Benny Safdie a ainsi tout misé sur son acteur phare, au détriment ou presque de tout le reste. Le film est donc divertissant plus que marquant ou intéressant. Tant pis.

In short:
While on paper, Smashing Machine promised some nice surprises (an A24 film where Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, finally has a serious role, alongside the ever-present Emily Blunt, all in a biopic about a little-known pioneering sports figure with a pleasantly old-school look), the reality is less glamorous than the sweaty bodies of the fighters in what would become the now iconic MMA. This is the story of Mark Kerr, a top-level wrestler who rose to international fame in the 1990s, until his addiction to opiates caught up with him. But while Dwayne Johnson’s performance is commendable in both the sporting and personal aspects of the story, the script is nothing more than a linear and insubstantial enumeration of moments in Mark Kerr’s life, relegating all the underlying roles and issues to the background or even to clichés – from romantic relationships to rehab, the hero’s global re-consecration, and Mark Kerr’s strong friendships with his peers. The director Benny Safdie has basically bet it all on his star actor, to the expense of almost everything else. And the film is therefore more entertaining than memorable or interesting. Too bad.
